I've used one and cars did give me more space, but I think a few also saw it as a moving target.

A 6ft piece of scaffolding pole will cause drivers to give you even more room as you wave it angrily at their vehicles, unfortunately it's a rather unwieldy device to carry.

A shot gun may be easier to carry but is bound to be in contravention of the licence to own one.

More seriously, what about Panniers? They probably stick out as much as the flag and some claim they cause you to be given more space.
    Do Nellyphants count?

    Learn how to ride defensively.

I've seen a couple of people with these devices. They are invariably pootling along incredibly slowly, either on the pavement or in the gutter, clearly without much sense of what's going on around them.
