Hello all, I am new :D

I was hoping for some advice/thoughts. I have been thinking about buying a bike to commute into work. It's 10 miles each way so it needs to be on the fast side or else I'll be on the bike all day (as I discovered when I hired a 10 ton dinosaur to test out the commute).

I have narrowed it down to two bikes:

The Btwin Fitness 2:

The Specialized Sirrus:

http://www.ukcyclestore.com/sport/specialized-sirrus.html

I've tried them both and I can't make my mind up. Should I consider the Sirrus Sport?

My budget is £300/£350...

I am no expert so need your invaluable advice. Merci!

  • Just a simple thing for me: twisted shifters on the Sirrus.
    Hate them things...

  • Yes I am not a fan either. The 2010 Sirrus doesn't have the twist shifters but is £100 more...

You might get way more for your money second hand. I picked up a trek 7.5 and 7.6 fx for less than 300 on ebay. Around £220 and £250 I think. Just had to wait as they often went for up to £400. I managed to get £300 and £400 when I sold them on although I must have got lucky there. Goes to show you'd be hard pushed to lose money.

I'd recommend those bikes, similar to higher end sirrus which you can also find cheap second hand, you'd probably pick up a sirrus comp for around 300.

To be honest I got fed up of the riding position on the hybrid while doing a 14 mile round commute and sold the bikes to get a proper road bike so for me buying second hand was the right choice.

Something to consider anyway, everyone's circumstances are different.
  • Oh, yeah, didn't say anything about that:

Picked up a six months old Sirrus Elite for the gf for a little bit over 300£.
Specs are a lot better than the one linked above: Carbon forks and seat post, Tiagra rear derailleur, the only thing I've upgraded on it was the brakes (but it might just be because I've got an acute upgraditis...)

  • Thank you all. I've been keeping my eye out on ebay for the past couple of months with not much success. I shall persevere.

Considering I am going to be 20 miles a day, do you think I should revise my choice?
  • frankly, my gf is very satisfied with her sirrus.
She did up to 65 miles on it, without problems.
