As many are on here im looking to build up a 2nd bike (hopefully improve mechanic skills) - my Reign will still be first choice but i want a hardtail i can use when going out in serious muck or for riding with the other half (beginner). I dont want it to be too 'XC' - more a jack of all trades - any recommendations for cheap frames either new or 2nd hand. Would be looking at paying £120ish max. Currently got Hayes Soles (off reign - new elixirs going on) and Outland bar/stem/grip combo (arrived in office this am, got some funny looks!) for it. Any advice much appreciated!

One one Inbred or 456 sounds right up your street.Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
456 ss, some revelations, deore gruppo (with wheels and brakes, much cheaper and better) flog the soles, they're a nightmare.0

as my reign was 2nd hand and to get me back riding i plan on using it until next summer and then grab a new bargain in the sales, id then sell the reign with the Soles back on and stick the elixirs on the hardtail - hmmm. some food for thought though!0

You can get a 2008 Merlin Malt 1 frame (19" only) for just £97.97 at the moment.0

bargain! but the white on-one inbred frame also looks good ...0

Have a look at the frames at All Terrain Cycles by Handsome Dog.0

Cheers sonic! Any recommendation on which to go for out of the xco1 or the talisman? The xco1 looks a tad more relaxed. The inbreds are lush for the cash but can't really justify on a budget build0

Most are XC biased - the Talisman is very light for steel though and a complete bargain. I nearly bought one at full price!0

Would the talisman take a 100mm fork?0
-
Yep - 80-100mm as far as I know.0

Has anyone got a Handsome dog frame? Mini review? I googled for reviews but not too much out there.
I'm thinking of getting an XC01 for a cheap single speed build (they don't have my size in a talisman).

looked into the handsome dog and would make a great xc whippet but was looking at 120mm Toras from JEJames which i know wont work - singlespeed not an option due to fitness and fatness. What does anyone reckon to the Sintesi 707? Can take a 120mm fork and looks to have a more relaxed feel. The on-one with postage etc comes to £150 - too much i think... ta for the advice guys0
