Daft Q re SPD pedals

Hi there, finally got some time to take my new bike out today and love it, only have one issue though and I feel extremely thick not being able to sort it.
Basically, my bike came with Shimano 505 SPDs with a plastic flat pedal insert in one side to ride home. Now I have some SPD shoes and want to take this plastic insert out. However I'd have assumed it would come out in the same way as unclipping the shoes, by sliding the rear outwards. However it dosn't seem to budge.
I don't want to force it as it wasn't budging with a decent amount of force.
Anyone familar with these inserts and can anyone advise me on how to remove them please?
Cheers.
Off I go to sit in the corner feeling very dumb

try slackening the adjustment nuts that set the tension for the SPD. Also check they don't have guide screws holding them in place.0

make sure you slacken the tension screw for the correct side and then twist it out.
there are no guide screws."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yep, the instructions for the pedal inserts say to loosen the tension on the pedals and then pry the insert out with a screwdriver.0

it's bloody tough, but the plastic is softer than the pedals, so 'ave at it!0
