I was at a local free ride park the other day and alot of people were using road style rear cassettes, is this common?

Also I heard talk of 4x bikes running 3/4 gears only in comps, does thsi mean they only USE the 4 gears outta the 8, or they have a 4 gear cassette?

road cassettes on gravity assisted based bikes is common, yes. It also means you can often run a road mech (dependant on chainring set up), which is smaller then a mtb one, so less chance of it hitting stuff.

And yes, some people do remove bits of their cassette and use spacers instead to save weight, but others are using 10 speed as well.

some will only have the gears they want fitted, but it all depends on the event.
