Stans Rim Strip Problem

I have fitted an Olympic rim strip to my ZTR355's (as advised by JRA)
I have had difficulty getting the rimstrip to sit down in the rim all way round, mainly because there is sone 'slack'. I have now seated the tyre but notice that the rim strip is peeking out in a few places (giving a 'wobble' on the tyre)
Should I be concerned? Should I dismount the tyre and try to get the rimstrip in under the rim all the way round? Any clever tips for doing this?

I had problems with my rim tape recently, I was advised to use electrical tape and have to say it works brilliantly! so good I dont even have rim tape in the wheel anymore cos dont need it.....could try that?Unlike my credit card im currently carrying a low level of interest- Peter Griffin

i think we are talking about two different things?
i'm referring to the rubber rim STRIP used with non ust tyres - as opposed to the rim TAPE i think you are referring to?0 -
yeh I just re-read the post and realised what your talking about.....yeh thats embarressing lol
im gonna go hide in the corner now haUnlike my credit card im currently carrying a low level of interest- Peter Griffin

On stans wheels you don't use rubber rim strips as they are designed to go tubeless, the sealant takes care fo the tyre sealing and seating issues, all you need is one revolution of the Yellow rim tape.
The rubber rim strips are for non-tubeless rims only, I had to fit them to my EX721 for me to go tubeless. Try taking the rim strip out and replace it with some of the yellow rim tape you can purchase, check notubes.com for the instructions it explains it all.

i beg to differ.
rim tape only with ust tyres but you have to use a rimstrip when mounting non-ust tyres on ztr rims. From Stans website:
Rim: ZTR 355, ZTR Olympic, ZTR 355 29er
Olympic Rim Strip: One layer of thin Yellow Tape or Universal Kit Tape under the strip.
plus i spoke to the guy in justridingalong on the phone - he told me the same thing0 -
The rim strip also allows the tyres to be pinched almost completely together at the beads, and still not leak air.
Without the rim strip, this is impossible.0 -
exactly.
so back to the point, should i be bothered about a little bit of the rim strip poking out?0 -
I've got non-UST Ralphs on ZTR Olympic rims fitted with just the yellow tape. It works fine. The hooked bead on the ZTR rims allows you to do it and the solution stuff plugs all the holes around the join. It should work with almost any tyre. However, if your rims have larger valve holes you will need the standard valve, not the Olympic.
The rim strip can be used if you want a more dependable fit with less burping. It also makes it easier to install and inflate the tyre.
To answer the question - there should not be any rim strip showing. Either you have not fitted it correctly, or you have the wrong strip.0 -
great, thanks.0

It wasn't mentioned in the original post that it was a non-tubeless tyre you were using, but I thought that as long as the Rim was tubeless compatable all you'd need was the sealant.
The tubeless tyres only have thicker sidewalls to deal with the inreased forces of holding the air in and dealing with the deformation when riding.0 -
with thinner rims you always want to run the yellow tape (method)
using a rim strip on a thinner rim is a recipe for trouble, because its VERY common for the rim strip to de-seat / twist whilst you install the tire
with wider rims like Stan's Flow, Sun Singletrack, Mavic EX721, this does not happen
at Freeborn, we were the original importer of Stan's and have been selling their stuff for many years, so speak from *sometimes* painful experience about good setups....Call 01372 476 969 for more information on UK\'s leading freeride park - Esher Shore www.eshershore.com0 -
thanks guys.
i took the rimstrip out and re-seated it as well as I could, but the tyre isn't seating right - still a serious wobble.
next logical step (i think) is to remove the rim strip and see if I can get the (non-ust) tyre to seal and inflate with just the yellow rim tape....0 -

Was in the 3rd though
UST tyres aren't just thicker, they have a kind of lip to them that mates up to the lip you get on a UST rim.0
