mudguards on a cross bike

i'm keeping my semi knobbly tryes on (700x35c) as i often do some off road stuff as well, just wondering how well a crudguard (the MTB one) or similar work at reducing spray on the road i'f i'm out on a ride with others?
I dont think the crud raceguards will fit if i have the 700x35 tyres on, and they'd be no use if i take any off road shortcuts as any mud would get caught in them.
Thanks

On the road, the wheels are turning faster and therefore mud and spray gets flung further - a crudguard on the front provides little protection IME - you get a facewash from the front tyre forward of the fork.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
