I have Ultegra/DA mix on one of my bikes. It's fine.

However, if it wasn't for compatibility across all my bikes I'd rather have the Campag for looks alone...

CAMPAG - Love the shifting action. Just push that button down and leave them standing.
    25th August 2013 12hrs 37mins 52.3 seconds 238km 5500mtrs FYRM Never again.
  • I have not used campag, but it wins for me for two reasons:

    1: Looks
2: Italian = Cool (im new to this and I already know this rule)

Im swapping my groupset to ultegra shortly, but wish I had gone for campag, but would mean new wheels etc...
  • It's Campag - not Campy

    he's right though.

anyway - campg carbon centaur is indeed ace - and much better than any japanese groupset you might be using.
  • Thanks for all the help think i know which direction i will go

    Cheers Again Chris
  • Just to muddy the waters further, Ribble are doing the new 11 speed Athena group for the same price as Centaur carbon. I've got one but not used it yet so I can't say which is better!

In terms of Campag versus Shimano, a lot of people approach the question from the wrong angle, ie which is better. They are both good, but Campag is better because it will go with any bike. If your new bike is Italian, or you might buy an Italian bike in future, you can't go putting Shimano on it. It will work, but it's wrong :D

  • I too was looking at Athena 11 too, but then i thought if i save a bit more maybe i could afford CHORUS but then were do you draw the line and just actually get the thing! lol Well i was thinking of getting one of the ribble carbon frames and putting centaur carbon on there. Unsure at the moment or would like to get the Kuota Kharma 09 with centaur if possible

Chris, Save a little bit more again an get a Colnago EPS with Super Record. In Zabel colours. You won't regret it.

(Although I think this is chorus...)

actually - I think if you 'could' afford chorus then that would be the ideal one to go for - no really - I think that Chorus is 'the' one to go for in the current campag line up - record isn't anything of an upgrade really and super record is just plain silly money - chorus is the ideal at the moment

    just a thought...
  • I seen the review for Chorus and it was outstanding ticked all the boxes in the function department faultless and i think campag looks far better than the other brands out there

May not be a massive issue - what wheels? Can't you swap the freehub or have a campag spaced cassette?
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

The EPS is kitted out with Super Record - slotted levers and black brake calipers give it away. You might be able to find some good deals on 2009 Ultegra as it's replaced with the ridiculously expensive 2010 version which is as expensive as Chorus.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

But the rear mech isn't carbon?

    Must be a mix...

Edit! I have crap eyes, it is carbon and indeed SR.

I've had Campag Carbon Centaur for the past 5 months. It hasn't put a foot wrong with regular use. The shifting is quick & sharp. It still looks the daddy and IMO looks better than most. The hoods are pretty comfy as well.

I would say the brakes are good, but aren't as good as I was expecting?

I've noticed "many" photos posted by your good self that don't meet the above rule? Especially when you get onto broken carbon!

That's Haydos' machine from weight weenies. Lovely machine, but not sure it's the best colour for that frame, bloody nice though.

Key thing for me is comfort on the hoods. I started with ultegra, then centaur, then back to ultegra - I think the shimano hoods are more comfy. and in my experience the shifting on ultegra is quieter and smoother. But in fairness I put eight years on that centaur groupset, nothing ever broke, nothing ever let me down, - its all good - but just try the hoods for comfort.
