Trek Portland - worth the money?

I have the chance to work away from home for a few months- and thus the chance to finally cycle to my place of work. I also get the chance to buy under the 'ride to work' scheme (other names applicable).

Before I place the order, I'm keen to hear from other commuters. I've done a fair bit of mountain biking and touring before, but for various reasons, I'm not taking my 25 year old Raleigh Wisp tourer, but I am buying with an eye on the new bike eventually replacing the Raleigh. MTB will stay at home as I'll be returning at weekends and using it then.

So........I've looked and looked and looked, but today I think I fell in love with a Trek Portland. It seems to tick all the boxes, but it IS expensive. If it lasts, I don't mind paying the extra though (I thought the Raleigh was expensive a the time- best bike I've ever bought).

Bike shop recommended it highly (at £1,000) they would of course, but they say it has few mechanical problems. I have the technical ability of a dyslexic octopus, I'm female, mid forties and slightly overweight (hopefully not by the end of my stint commuting.) The commute is one third cycle path, one third A road, and one third busy city traffic. The bike will be fitted with rear panniers. All weathers, starting October and continuing through until March.

Apologies if there is already a thread on Portlands elsewhere, but I would be very grateful for any advice.
