Was looking at Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLs recently but have emailed wheelsmith with my requirements to see what they come up with as the Cosmic's are pretty heavy considering (down to the clincher build i suppose).

Can someone reassure me that moving to tubs is not a mistake?

Moving to tubs is not a mistake.

As long as you aren't using them everyday...

Is that because it increases the puncture risk or due to longevity concerns relating to the actual wheel?

neither... its about the cost to replace good tubs if you get a puncture.

a Vittoria Corsa Evo is about £40 - £50 a go...it gets expensive if you are puncture prone.

    tubes are cheaper.

I went to gigantex tubs with corsa evo's this season and love them. no puntures to date (tempts fate!)

Ahh i see - my initial goal would not be to use them every ride but I am assuming that I will need to use carbon specific brake pads? If so it will be annoying changing them over all the time unless there is a brake block that can do both jobs?

they come with a set of carbon specific brake blocks.(which are on my TT bike)

I bought a set of swissstop yellow for my road bike, but Derek recommended i do not mix them with carbon and aluminium rims, as the block will pick up alloy shards, which embed in the brake compound and will cause premature wear on the carbon rim.

As a result, i swap my alloy brake block for the swissstop yellow ones if i choose to use my carbon wheels on my road bike.

Other will prob. say swisstop yellow are ok to mix between carbon and alloy rims, but i'm not taking the chance - it is only a 5 min job to swap the cartridges over.

i've got some cheap tubs (vittoria rally - £10, and continental giro - £13) that i'll use as a spare....i will prob go for vittoria Paves next as good tyres, as they appear a bit more robust than the Corsa's

I might get a set of conti sprinter gatorskins for general riding - that way i might use my carbon wheels a bit more often...

    Thanks for the advice

I think a cheapo tub would be my back up tyre.

Do you use tape or glue by the way?

    i'm using tape -

Advice given to me by Derek was velox Jantex Tape for italian tubs (vittoria / veloflex) & tufo extreme tape for Continental and Tufo tubs . glue for hard cornering events like crits - match glue to tubs -

PMP hubs are superb, beautifully finished and the bearings roll so smoothly. They're far superior to generic crap like the Novatec ones!

Just don't lose the lockring remover as it's PMP specific

Whats the approx weight of the set on the PMP hubs? Is circa 1400g a reasonable assumption?
