I don't think the volumes are really there yet, so there probably aren't the economies of scale. SRM's are stupidly expensive because they are designed and built in Germany, not known for it's low cost manufacturing. It does surprise me though that no major players in the bike industry have jumped on the powermeter bandwagon. i.e. imagine Trek throwing their R&D budget into developing a proprietary system for their bikes.

    Hi there.

It's not in Trek's interests in investing money to grow this market - that's where PowerTap (and until recently ergomo) come into things. Once power measurement has gone mass market, then Trek will be able step in with a $100 device and leverage their brand name,

In the early 90s heart rate monitors cost £300+ and were only really used by pro athletes. You can pick them up for £25 in Aldi now. Power meters will go the same way.

Pricing will be what the market can bear, not how much it costs - but the simplicity of the design probably means there's scope for adjustment as there is downward price pressure - i don't think it's unreasonable to expect <£200 power meters in 3-5 years - look at how much SRMs were a few years ago.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I know everyone is predicting prices of powermeters to crash, but I can't see it happening for a good while yet. The technology in use has been around a while now with only the Ant+ stuff being anything new in recent years. Now, they just need the volume to make the costs fall, and to be honest I don't think they have widespread appeal amongst cyclists yet. And AFAIK, SRMs have become a lot more expensive over the last 12 months (as much to do with currency as anything else though)
  • Hi there.

I've heard these will retail for $1000... too much!

Do people think these are really that expensive compared to the stuff on the market? If you wanted a powermeter that you could use in competition surely these are pretty cheap? Powertaps are about the same price with an open pro build, and you probably wouldn't use those whilst racing.

I've just been poking round their site after discovering this thread. I'll be surprised if they go for an equivalent price in the UK, usual rip-off Britain tactics are likely to apply, but that aside I'd say if they can announce a launch date they'll be better than a Powertap.

    Ant+ compatible
    independent leg measurement
    lighter
easier to swop bikes compared to Powertap (campag / shimano issues) and compared to SRM/Quarq (compact / regular issues)

Unless they fall apart or are incredibly inaccurate I don't see much of a downside?

This is speaking as someone who doesn't already have any sort of powermeter but does have a 705 already.

I've been saving my pennies for a Powertap and the only thing making me wonder about hanging on is the vague launch date.

Anyone know anything more about them other than what's on their own site?
