I seem to remember somewhere on here that if you fit a new type BB as in the Deore that I have ordered and your currrent ride is on a square taper setup(1999 Spesh Hardock Comp) you may have to have something done to the bottom bracket portion of the frame. Is this correct and if so what is it and why does it need doing?? Bit of an old school mtb'r trying to get back into it and upto date at the same time.

Yup, you need the BB shell facing, to ensure that the external bearings are perfectly parallel

ooh I didn't do that - whats that all about - any links?

do you still need to do it if you go square to square?
  • Went to LBS today about this facing business and was told that they had just got the kit in to do it and because they didn't yet quite know how to use it and how long it would take that it would cost somewhere about £15-£20. Being in engineering myself and now understanding what and why this needs to be done with external bb's, I don't think I want to be the guinea pig with someones new toy that they don't know how to use yet and I think it be a bit pricey too. Bit short on decent bike shops in this area, can anyone outthere recomend a good bike shop in my area????

nope, have a read of parktools.

but the bb face that has the flange of the bb pressed against it should be faced.
