Could a track sprinter beat Usain Bolt?!

Lunch time debate started between a few mates about who would be faster over 100m?

I argued that it would be very close, but that I thought Bolt would edge it over 100m due to the initial problems with getting a big gear spinning. Over 200m I thought the cyclist would edge it.

As I have nothing to back this up I wondered if anybody knew the answer?

If it was only over a 100 metres why would you need a big gear?
  • eeerm, try a search massive thread on this, bolt faster to around 150m or so then the cyclist takes him apart. that's even with gears.
  • I tried this at my local track

Bolt was rubbish, couldn't get on with the banking - or so he said.
    Crap loser......

I think the worlds best times from the team sprint over the first 125m are around10.5s, which suggests a top track sprinter (Jamie Staff for example - worlds fastest over a single lap from a standing start) would beat Bolt over 100m.
