Sorry if this has been done before (blame it on the crappy search facility) but what are people's experiences with buying mail order from J. E. James in Sheffield?

Just been alerted to rather a bargain they've got on at the moment but as they aren't one of the more usual mail order houses I thought that I'd ask for advice?

Ordered a few bits and never had a problem personally.
  • Although i have not bought online, recently bought a New Trek 6300 from their shop in Rotherham. Staff were really helpul & service (and after sales) excellent. If the online service is as good you shouldn't be disappointed.

My problem with JE JAmes, and why I have, and never will, order from them, is that they keep hundreds or thousands of goods on their web site that are out of stock, and at unrealistic prices. When you use a web product search, such as Google, this "ploy" means they frequently feature first in the list, thus generating site traffic. Of course this often leads to disappointment. I think this is at best, bad practice, and if they advertise products as in stock when they are not, they would be breaking the advertising regulations.

I am afraid I wouldn't trust them because of this, there are plenty better options.
  • I ordered a pair of Sombrio gloves in March as the website indicated they were in stock. After about 3 weeks and no show I emailed them. No response. I rung about six times before speaking with a very helpful and apologetic guy who said he would send them out asap.

Two weeks later = no show.

rang again. Guess what? out of stock!

they did refund me straight away though and a mate got a few cheap tops off them so I wouldn;t rule out using them again
  • I'would use them again, however the thing about them being out of stock is true. When they were out of stock they offered me an alternative or said reorder in a week or so.
The delivery time was ok as well.

  • The out of stock thing has put me off too - always coming up in searches, but out of stock when you try and order! That is one of my pet hates with internet shopping and put's me off using companies like that :(
  • ive had a few things form them, one order came split as one set o=were out of stock and discontinued but are still on the site!
that said what was in stock came quickly and was a good price,

there is a big thread on stw about it and they are apparantly going through the site trying to rectify the overstock info, but will take time!

  • ^ I'd go along with that. I've had small bits off them and they came with no fuss, good price. I phoned up 3 days ago after some easton ea50 bars that were up for £21, they just didn't have the clamp size on them and I needed clarification, 31.8 or 25.4s and by the end of the day I noticed that all their easton bars had had the spec and prices adjusted (upwards in most cases I might add).
  • went to je james in sheffield last wkend (all the way from south wales!!) to collect my new remedy 8 as was sooo much cheaoer than anyone else - had great service!!! :D

  • I`ve got to admit I found them very good. I have bought 2 Dahon folders for my Dad and several other bits and pieces as their pricing has been exceptionally good. Good service and delivery as I recall. They are always worth looking up to compare prices. I recently bought a Smart 5-LED front light for £7.99 which normally retails for around £20!! :D

Tried them once, never again. Ordered some forks at 8am Tuesday morning & paid for faster delivery, ample time to be delivered in time for the weekend I though!
Phoned them Thursday midday, very unhelpful with a cant be bothered attitude on the phone to find they hadn't even processed the order yet.
I cancelled it, ordered from Merlin & the forks arrived in under 24 hours. I know who I will be using in the future, its just a shame merlin have ruined their website!

Similar thing is currently going on with me. I've had a few orders mostly for clothing from them all no problem. Not the fastest on dispatch/delivery, but still no complaints until a couple of weeks ago.
Ordered a Royal jersey from them that was in stock. Wasn't in a hurry for it so used free delivery. Almost three weeks later, nothing. Emailed them on Friday and again today. No response. Will call them tomorrow and see.

A lot of people do seem to have issues with out of stock stuff @ JE James so I'd be cautious about recommending them however I've used them a few times and stuff always arrived quickly so no complaints personally.
  • Thing is with JEJames, they have 3 shops and the website sells stock from the shops. A lot of their bargain prices are stock which, in the shop, are crammed tight onto rails or even in a bargain bin cardboard box for you to root through.

If you find a bargain, i'd personally ring them up and make sure that they have it in stock, not just on their computer systems, but get them to physically track down the item as their stock management system isn't very good.

Their staff have always been good when i've dealt with them, so, taking into account the above i'd use them for mail order, but i wouldn't blindly order off their website!

Have bought from them many times. The stock issue has bit me also. They don't answer emails - EVER. Hard to get help on the phone.

But if you're lucky - they will have what you ordered and their prices are great. I've personally been into a 2 of their shops in person to buy also and have received great deals.
  • mea00csf is bang on. The stock in their shops is not the best organised. Twice now I've rung to check stocks but then they couldn't find the item when I went to collect.

Luckily I work near one of the shops and live near another so it's not too much bother. They do frequently have great prices on stuff though.

  • I'd definatley phone to check the stock. Had experience with myself and mates buying bikes from there recently and trying to work out what they have and which shop its in, the staff are mostly very helpful though, even if the computer system isn't. Saw some lights marked as £3 so thought i'd have some, turns out they should have been £16, so bought two sets for £3!! They do have good bargains though.

Overall they are a good bike shop with a lousy stock system! Never mail ordered though as i live and work within 20-30 mins of chesterfield and shefield.

Just had a couple of bits delivered from them. Ordered Sunday, arrived today. (I also ordered some stuff from Wiggle at the same time which also arrived at the same time...).

No problems really other than their website said they would only deliver to the cardholder's address. I just said the cardholder's address was my work address and hoped for the best, it all arrived OK...
