  • I have the RS10'S they're ok but rather heavy, i'm only 10 stone so if i had the choice i'd get the PX ones but i expect some strength is compromised to get the lightness..........
I suppose it depends on your weight and where/how often you'll be riding

P.S spotted these earlier which might help make up your mind:

Also i think the model b's are out of stock until 06/10

yeah, that the rs10's i'm interested in.
thing is though, i've heard a few threads/stories about snapping spokes on the rs10's and i've heard the models b's have a good rep.
Even worth the wait for new stock?.......

  • I have the model b's . I don't have much to compare them to but have had no problems with them. I weigh fifteen and a half stone and the've stayed pretty true over the last year.
  • I've used the Model B's for around 800 miles now.
I weigh 85kg (13st), and they've held up pretty well, although one spoke on the rear continually comes loose after every ride. I've also had to send the rear wheel to my LBS to true it up a bit. The front is good as gold though.
They spin up nicely, and think they would be ideal for a rider of your weight.

    Hope this helps

  • Hello my fine rimmed friends,

Simple answer to the above question..... Rs10's or Planet X b's

really no choice if you are an underfed Biafran like your good self. The mighty Lars Engstrum has been riding amongst others The aforementioned Planet X model b's and would in a personal shake your hand firmly and look you in the eye kind of way. More than recomend them for both lightness, stiffness, good quality hubs and very smooth bearings, certainly and quite importantly in my opinion seem to have a very durable brake surfaces. Feel very quick and would therefore (still squeezing your hand and looking into your eyes in a Rumpole of the Bailey manner) advise you to give those fine chaps at Planet X your money.

Rs10's are nice, good bearings and durable though the lightness of the B's will be a revalatiory experience.Like Jesus cooking you lamb on toast

Unless of course you have the riding manner of the ape in the Clint Eastwood films, Any Which Way but Loose with the albino lady who Clint for some reason married and subsequently divorced. Maybe the monkey got in the way? Clyde, that was the hairy arsed ******.
    Cheers Lars

One negative on my B's the join is quite obvious at the curve of the rim, though not on the braking surface which is very uniform.
  • I think lars had graduated from the James May School of journalism.
    Any takers?

The Model B freehub is a noisy bugger, the Shimano hubs are lovely and quiet.

In terms of performance, I swapped from R500s to the Model Bs but didn't really see a difference.

  • Good Evening Evil Monkey,

Thank you for your outrageously quick response from your possibly marmalade stained keyboard in deepest Darkest, (puts on Pam Ayers accent) Sumerrset,

If I were a Londoner living in the 15th century I feel I would be scared in case the man in charge of village pigs came knocking at the door wanting his pound of raw flesh if you understand what I mean Mr Monkey?

Hope your safe........Tonoight? (Pam Ayers again)

    Love Lars,

Actually never been there.... Worth coming over for the 'riding'?

I have the Planet X wheels on a bike I built last winter. They seemed to be quite light in the price range they are in and have stayed true this year, I'm 6'3" and 14 stone. I'd certainly recommend them.

There have been a number of threads on here about planet-x freehubs being aluminium and chewing-up if using Shimano 10sp cassettes, OK if 8/9sp or SRAM or Campag.

That was the case but their hubs are now 10 speed only, and there's no problem (other than not being able to use 8/9 speed).

    10 speed?
Then its the RS10's then, i'm not lumping in the price of a reasonable 10 spd derailleur + chain.

  • i have the PX model B's they're great value for money and very light for their price, also they are very sturdy and responsive, dont know much about the rs 10's but hope that helps

If you really wanted the P-X Bs couldn't you get the freehub swapped for an 8/9 speed compatible one?

If its between px and RS10 then get the planet X.

RS-10 spoke count is too low for their build quality, heavy, not durable enough and when the spokes start breaking, and they will, you wont be able to find replacements for love nor money.

Right now for example they are out of stock everywhere, have been for some time and wont be in for at least a month. The fastest way to get new RS-10 spokes is to buy a new wheel.
  • I've had a PM from a local poster with some Model B's for sale.
Quite reasonable until you get to the part

Shimano 8/9/10 speed, freehub body is a bit chewed up (common problem) but otherwise VGC

BTW, to the poster (if you read this) i am seriously considering the offer but a bit Paul-Weller-Hung-Up-63272-991.jpg over the chewed up part

I've got Shimano RS20's.Which are very similar to the RS10 wheels, done about 7000miles on them so far.I trued them after a couple of hundred miles but since then then they have remained perfectly true.I'm not heavy at 10st,but have ridden some pretty rough roads&hit the odd pothole at speed.I did get a couple spare spokes shortly after buying the wheels but have'nt neede them so far-touch wood.Hope this helps.

Is this hearsay or statistically significant?

Before I bought a pair of RS10s all the user reviews I read seemed to suggest they hold up fine in daily use.

Both my experience and from what I've heard suggests spokes start breaking after about 2k miles. Or in the case of my rear wheel, 1700 miles.

As for replacement spokes, I've had a broken RS-10 here for about 2 months, my LBS has been out of stock of the spokes, said they havent had stock in some time and have no idea when stock is due to arrive. Same story on the internet. Petras do now however have a due date for the spokes of 30th October.

My RS-10 came as OE on my bike. They went out of true within 50 miles, have been retrued twice and went out again just as quickly. They have a harsh ride too, seriously ouch. I'm not even a heavyweight at 135lbs so before you start thinking I must be some kind of heffer let me assure you these wheels are pish!

Having said all that, the front is still ok after 2.3k, with a very slight almost unoticeable side to side kick. But the front doesnt recieve anything like the kind of punishment the rear does. It does however feel rather flexy when hammering out of the saddle, it is certainly not confidence inspiring.

Maybe I got unlucky or more likely that RS-10's are cheap and fancy looking junk hoops. They are designed to look fancy and "pro" with their low spoke counts as bling factor for people that know no better. If you must go with cheap low spoke count wheels better off with Aksiums I reckon.
  • I must be up to about 3k miles on my RS10'S i reckon, not a problem, still as straight as a, um, er, true wheel :) (surprising how miles build up actually until ya grab a calculator. Anyway they've definately done 2k miles and are now on the winter bike. :D
