Rob I Hayles sprinting style

The other day in the ToB ( can't remember the stage - it was probably London) Rob Hayles competed in the sprint finish. However I noticed that Rob didn't do the usual hell for leather standing on his pedals style sprint but instead stayed seated. He was definitely going for the win and wasn't doing a lead out and he seemed to hold his own until the very end.

I can't say I've notice Mr Hayles doing this before but I was wondering whether it was because of his time on the track that he took this approach. Anyone know?

Can say I do the same on the commute on my SS. Can crank up the speed to nearly 30 when seated but fail when standing.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • I've got a memory of Hayles doing exactly as you describe to beat an out-of-the-saddle Stuart O'Grady in a 2-up sprint finish, possibly into Edinburgh, in the final PruTour of 1999. I would think, and I assumed so at the time, that this sort of sprinting legspeed would indeed have something to do with his track background.
