Me thinks my lower race on CK headset is shot!

Arse, I've had my Chris King headset on my bike since last new year, I rode it last week in the loverly dry weather we've been having, got back then left it in the living room (the missus was away) until the next day, when I went to take it outside I noticed a graunchy noise coming from the forks.

I took it apart and found the lower race was really rough. I cleaned it out following a service guide in 'another' bike magazine re-greased and re-built it. It was fine then, got back today after another dry ride, and although it's not as bad as before, it isn't as smooth as it should be.

Now I've only just realised they come with a 10 year guarantee :roll: so do you think I could I go back to the lbs and ask them to sort it even though I've had the seal and circlip out and re greased it with probably the incorrect grease?

I think that CK are one of the rare companies that require the headset to be returned to them for replacement.

Talk to the place of purchase and then maybe buy another headset so you can continue to use the bike.

Thanks Nick, I hope I can just buy a lower race from them.

I spoke to the LBS who said they'd have to send the whole thing back to CK in the UK - Evolution imports, but, after calling them direct they said I could if I wanted, send only the lower race. After speaking to them though I decided I can go through exactly the same cleaning process (sonic bath with Muck Off) myself.

So, if that don't work I'll send it back to them to sort.
