Folding tyres - please say it isnt so!!

I have recently switched to folding tyres after years using wired on's. A wise old sage has advised me not to use them on the front as (he claims) they are prone to rolling off the rim and getting tangled in brakes etc when punctured. I heard the same tale years ago about tubulars but I never had a problem as long as they were glued on properly.
Is there any truth in the warning about folders - or is it yet another myth?

I have never seen a folding tyre come off the rim, don't worry about it.0

load of bollocks, never heard that before, particularly at road bike pressures.0

I'd go for myth. It may well have happend once, but I haven't heard of it happening. The trouble some people have getting the things on their wheels suggests that they are not likely to fall off. If you are that careful (pun intended) see which are the worst for putting on, and assume they'll also be the least likely to come off.0 -
I mean you could roll one off if you flatted, but even then it's a struggle.
That could happen with wired ones too0 -
Some people claim that folding tyres are harder to fit and get off than the wired ones, but for me, the opposite is true. And no, I've NEVER seen one fall off :P0

while working as a bike mechanic, i've realized that folding tires, which are typically more high end, are much more difficult to fit and have a less flexible bead. I typically fit four or more a day, to give myself some credibility0

Can't see a flat folding tyre coming off the rim unless maybe you're trying to corner on it at speed. And in that case, don't worry, you'll crash long before your tyre has the chance to come off and get tangled in the brakes. Course you're equally likely to crash on a flat front wire beaded tyre.
Defo a myth.0 -
When mine are flat I struggle to get them off using levers
I vote for myth.None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
I've got Hutchinson foldable tyres on my "best" bike, they're not very good and in fact are too big for the rim. I've had a couple of punctures with them but they have never fallen off the rim!
The biggest problem I have is getting them to seat properly on the rim, because they are slightly to large for the rim (supposed to be the right size - 700c), I have to be very careful or I end up exploding tubes because a little bit is poking out.Do not write below this line. Office use only.0 -

There, I fixed that for ya.0 -
Nonsense! I have ridden about 15 miles on a flat folding tyre (yes really). Aside from denting and scratching my rim the Tyre did not come off, wasn't exactly pretty after that though!!
P.S, Don't forget your pump..... :oops:0
