Stiff shift lever

Hi there
Apologies if this is answered somewhere else in the forum, but I couldn't find anything when I searched. (Comes from not knowing the right names for things.)
I have a three-and-a-bit year-old mountain bike which I've been using to ride to and from work. Shamefully, in that time I've done very little maintenance and I think it's starting to show.
My right gear shifter - the one that shifts the rear derailleur - is extremely stiff when I try to shift down gears (move to a larger cog). The shift levers are Shimano ST-EF29-8, and look something like this:

I've opened them up and taken a look and there didn't seem to be anything wrong, but it sounds a bit squeaky. Any tips?
Cheers!

a bit of GT85 spray.
and check that the cable moves freely."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just get new cables - cut to same size as originals, and you will be OK.
Inner cable and outers...huge difference.....0 -
Thanks for the help. GT85 sorted the shifter out, but I think I do need a new cable as suggested.0
