Cycleops Fluid turbo problem

I've just bought a new Cycleops fluid trainer. Trouble is that I can't get the two bits that hold the rear wheel open enough to get the rear skewer in. Don't think I'm being stupid - one side is fixed and the other side is wound fully open and it still seems a cm or two too short to get the rear skewer in.

Anyone had similar or got some advice please?
