Rib protection

I bust my ribs last week in Cornwall after a cider-fueled hike in the pitch black through woodland lol, I have a few rides coming up and need some sort of protective vest that I can wear underneath my t-shirt/jersey.
Protection around the rib area is paramount.
I want something lightweight and not too pricey, any suggestions?
Thanks

CRC has some options in your price range as, I guess, will most online retailers.0
-
Thanks for that, I always check there first, I was actually wondering if anyone had any real use from a certain product, rather than me pickk something random and waste my dosh0

CRC do have user reviews, at least for some products, but how much stock you want to put in them is up to you. No experience myself, I'm afraid.0

661 core saver maybe - although my 661 assualt suit chest protector part doesn't look like it would do much apart from stop grazing.0

You've bust a rib and are still riding?
Christ, when i bruised my floating ribs, I could barely lean over, let alone ride.0 -
There are plenty of good rib protectors in the karting world, start from under £20, I couldn't say if there were any good for pedaling in but work well in crash though.-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford? :roll:0 -

LOL, not riding at the moment, I can't even lay on my side in bed, or bend over/lift anything, breathe in, you get the picture. Just have some rides (including the forum meet) coming up, and dont want to risk damagfing them again....
Im not that tough! l,ol0 -

I have an OMP one. Would be bugger all use for riding or for use after damaging the ribs.
All they do is spread impact load to reduce the chances of damage."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

That's pretty much all armour does in any case - my humble opinion - if you dont think its a good idea riding with injured ribs then, errr, dont!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
To be honest, I'd let them properly heal before riding again...
Armour-wise, I'd tend to go toward Forcefield stuff... it works slightly differently to most but is really effective in spreading the force out, which is really what you want armour to do... Gets excellent write-ups in the motorcycle press and I use it for snowboarding in particular...0 -
Excellent stuff just what what I was looking for
TBH I think you are right, I awoke this morning in agony (again) and it's been a week, I don't think they are going to get better anytime soon..... so no riding for me and I have a new bike coming in a couple of days
Will get some of the rib protectors (74.99) for when they do heal though!0 -

my sympathies. I fell in May and immobilised my knee for a month ... the same day that Mrs B picked me up a new IBIS Tranny frame in Canada! I built it then had to look at the thing every day as I hobbled between the bed and the loo. It was torture
the knee did get better though and the bike was still there and raring to go when I was ready!Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
Adam, I bust a few ribs way back in May when I had an over the bars excursion down at Ae 7stanes.. has taken me months to get back to some kind of fitness, even now after all this time i get the odd twinge from the old ribs....take it easy and don't overdo it for a good couple of months. ribs still ache when i am doing hill climbs on the trails (at that point I get off and walk...LOL)... :roll:0

I wouldn't bother armouring up, unless you're riding some pretty extreme stuff to be honest.
If you armoured up to cover all eventuality, you'd look like a medieval jousting boffin.0 -

BRILLIANT!
I am concerned over the forum ride (17th Oct), I really want to ride, I mean, I shall go anyway even if I cannot ride, but that kind of defeats the object though, but there is beer and BBQ though and would be great to meet everyone, that means though, that even if my ribs are healed, my fitness is going to be shite with no riding for 7 weeks beforehand0 -

Though you might want to consider it next time you're pissed
Right, so, the topic... If you're worried about landing on the damaged side, armour might help but the weak spot will still be incredibly weak, realistically even with armour you're going to re-break the ribs if you land on them within a couple of weeks of breaking them. And that'll overstrain the neighbours as well. But, it might make a bit of difference by spreading the blow a bit.
As for riding with broken ribs, I'm well hardcore, broke one of mine last week then rode home after the crash. Off to Glentress on wednesday. But it depends on the rib, I was good for nothing when I broke 2 right low down because they move so much but this one's higher up and seems more stable/less painful. Though I'm sure if I fall on it I'll regret it!Uncompromising extremist0 -
Mine are the floating ribs on right side, 2-3 lower ones, but it has had a knock on effect to all of the surrounding muscle/cartilidge/tissue, so ache pretty much all over my right side.....
I could always ride gingerly, and don't take anything too technical on...0
