I have just had to replace my chain as it broke on me five times when I went out last.

The bike is 4 months old, and may be 20 off road rides.

I cannot remember fitting a new chain on my 7/8 speed bikes, and they do a lot more miles.

Are 9 speed systems more delicate ?

I have put on a Sram chain.

    Not really.

Many say 8 speed survives better in bad conditions, but I suspect you just had a bad chain.
  • You may also be a bit brutal on your chain. If you use extremes of ratios front and rear (big front to big rear, small to small) you put a lot of stress on chains. shifting a lot while stomping the pedals can damage the chain to. As can lack of lube etc etc.

If any of the above sounds like you - rethink your shifting rather than the groupset. If not then yeah the chains are fragile!
