Rear Disc issue.

Now....I thought it'd be easy to resolve however I may be a little less clever than I thought and have made things worse.

Pranged a couple of spokes on a ride out so took the wheel off and had them fixed. When I've gone to put the wheel back the rear discs (Avid Juicy3) had closed not giving enough space for the wheel. After prizing (sp. ?) a little, managed to squeeze the wheel in but the rubbing was still bad.

Here comes the amateur part....

I then searched the net to find a solution but couldn't really hit it so decided to loosen a few screws, as you do. I've managed now to drip some fluid out (not a lot) and the brake lever is quite slack. And not suprisingly its done naff all to my pads.

So prior to taking it to the shop I thought I'd throw a thread on here to you clever people and see if theres a resolve for a 'not too clever in the bike maintanence dept - YET !' fella.

Thanks in advance.

  • I'm no expert but it sounds like you've let air air in the system, a good bleed should sort them out.
You can buy the bleed kit on a decent online shop and just google the instructions!

Is that something a learning novice can do ? Also how about prizing the discs, is it just a case of pushing harder ?

    Cheers for the reply !
  • Not sure about Juicy3's, but on my Stroker's you can push the piston back using a flat screwdriver or the box end of a spanner.

take them to the shop they WILL need bleeding and you MAY need new pads now.

Avids are quite hard to bleed, but you can get a kit for 15-20 quid about the cost of a bleed.
lesson: always put some card board in the calliper when you take your wheels off for any length of time . Next time use some dinnerset knives to gradually push the pads back. and i mean gradually. i.e. put 2 in leave for an hour put another in repeat etc.

Thanks for the advice and tips. There should be a schoolboy error thread with stuff like this on, I'd be reading it daily !
