On-One 456 stem: Best budget buy?

Silly me ordered and received a set of trekking bars (Modolo Dumbo) without ensuring I had the correct clamp size, so I need a 25.4mm stem...

Looking for ~100mm, degree of rise is not important, due to versitility of new bars. My main concern is how the stem will cope with 600mm wide bars.

Is there anything else I should be considering besides the 456 stem, without spending more than £25?

firstly why on earth would you want 600mm trecking bars on a seriously hardcore HT like the 456, anyway, to answer the question id say a on-one 3-D its only anout £10 and is great for the price, comes in a few lengths, and is 25.4 mm only.

He never said he had a 456 bike ;-) He is looking at the 456 stem.

Which is very very good value.

ALso look at the Kooka Race, and Exotic stems:

  • Who said anything about putting trekking bars on a 456 bike?

The stem I was thinking of buying is called the "On-One 456 stem," which will then go on my Saracen Pylon 8, not so hardcore urban/light off-road monster ;)

  • be fair to the guy. when I saw "on-one 456 stem" I also assumed the Q was about a stem for an on-one 456

    obviously I was wrong too....

By trekking bars you mean butterfly?

anyhoo, 600mm bars aren't wide at all and the clamp should handle butterfly bars I would have thought.

OTOH you can get a shim for your current stem (assuming it's 31.8) but the on-one stem is that cheap that you may not save much....

Having seen the stem, I'm reasonably sure that this is an OEM out of a Taiwanese factory that makes the same item for several manufacturers. I have one branded XTC on my old SS, which looks *very* similar and is all good, frankly and super super light. I also have one one the way from IBIS for my new SS (also an IBIS) which according to the pictures is likely either the same or very similar. But it has the IBIS logo on it so is worth the premium I paid, obviously.

Taking functionaility aside, I do like the end cap design of the Kooka Race, found a 110mm for £18 inc. p+p at...

Exotics seem to be harder to come by in 100mm 25.4mm, they look chunky, but who knows if that helps functionality.

I'm in two minds about the "On-One 456," purely based on a comment in the "3D Forged" review earlier this week...

"plus there’s a heavier duty ‘456’ version. It's slightly flexy though, and only comes in the smaller 25.4mm standard diameter."

I have both a 100mm Kooka and the Extoic Meta AL stems. Both nice and light!

i think the flexy bit is refering to the normal one, the 456 should be fine.

  • Yep, trekking bars are also known as butterfly bars, a dying breed in the land of blighty.

Thanks all, decided looks were most important factor and at £15 excluding p+p, just ordered the 100mm/25.4mm Kooka Race :)
