Am seriously considering buying a new rear wheel, uless a good secondhand one comes up soon.

Got my eye on hope 2 hub but unsure which rim, good deal on @ wiggle but many rims to choose from, think I have narrowed it down to either:

DT Swiss EX500
or
Mavic 521

But they also have

Mavic 717/721 or DT Swiss 4.2d

I want something that's gonna last, I'm 84kg and ride mainly the s.wales trails, on a Felt compulsion 2, so want something that's gonna take a few hits

Anybody have any recommendations?

  • skip the 4.2d a bit flimsy, for what you want.

I'd go for a 719 rim. Plenty tough enough for what you're doing.
  • I'd go 5.1 or one of the 19/21 or even 23 mavics (the last 2 numbers is the rim width on the mavics) 3 5 or 7 (think BMW series....) take your pick from the budget you have

719 is tough enough, as R_W says
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day
  • Oh actually what size rubber will you be running. If 2.3" then i'd say go up to a 721 for a nicer tyre profile. My 2.3" panaracers feel a bit pinched on the 719s.
  • Cheers for reply, currently running maxxis 2.5 maxpro, which is probably a bit wide/OTT but grips like a muther

As for the 719 they didn't seem to be on the offer :

Only the mavic 721 and dt swiss ex500 in stock !

No love for the DT then?
