Hi, Complete newbie here on bike maintenance so please bear with me!!
I have a problem with my rear mech SRAM X4 shifter and i am going to replace it with a X5 shifter. Is it a simple swap over or is it more indepth with setting gears again?
Thanks in advance

You'll probably need to tweak the cable tension when you fit the new one. Follow the instructions that come with your shifter and you should be fine. Your front/rear mech is already set so you are just getting the cable tension right to ensure slick shifting. It's not as harrowing as it seems. Do it slowly step by step and you'll be fineNeil

take your time and you'll be fine, if not pop into your lbs for the fine tweak or so, if you've got a good relationship then it shouldn't cost you a penny.0

erm, I'm not so familiar with SRAM shifters; can you take the cable out without threading it back though? if you can't then you're looking at a new cable inner (they're a pig to get out and thread back though again once cut as the end frays)
it's not hard though and as R_W says, you can always go to your LBS afterwards for tweaking and advice. Well worth doing yourself IMOEverything in moderation ... except beer

X-5 comes with the inner fittedNeil

Turn off water.
Remove old shitter.
Put rag in soil pipe whilst you prepare new shitter to prevent smells.
Fit new shitter.
Turn water back on.

ah, cool, but that means that you *do* have to "set the gears" again, as the OP requests, although the limit screws should be fine. I was just wondering if Sram had a clever system so you could remove the cable "sideways" through the shifter like you can with v-brake cables, instead of having to slide it out through the eye of the needle, so to speak.
I really don't think I explained that well enough but it doesn't matter, as it seems you can't.Everything in moderation ... except beer

Are the shifters both the same 'speed'? ie 8 or 9?0
