Ok does anybody have just one bike. One bike for all year round. I am considering selling my other bikes and wondering what the wear and tear would be like if I were to ride my goodun all year round. Cheers Tony.

If I did, it would be made from titanium and have mid-to-high range groupset like Campagnolo Chorus, a pair of quality handbuilt wheels. IME good quality kit survives winter far better than the cheap stuff because of the better quality finish and materials.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I've only got the one bike, Enigma Eclipse with full Ultegra SL (including the wheels) I built it up in january this year and just had to change the chain, everything else is fine, though I must say I don't do a fantastic amount of miles 80-100 per week and it only gets out if it's not raining.

Impossible and too horrible to contemplate having only one bike-unless it was a dog to start with.

Winter roads throwing up grime and salt spray would mean massive amounts of TLC to stop it becoming a pile of junk by the time summer came along.

By the way, does anyone know what day summer starts this year?
  • You'd have to change the chain on a VERY regular basis,I think.
    Then,as said above,A titanium frame (mudguard compatable,for winter of course) & a decent GS & some decent,handbuilt 36 spoke wheels,with,say,open pro rims
    so many cols,so little time!
  • I have only the one bike - a 2 year old Sirrus. Does all I want it to. Don't understand why you'd need any more really.

    Pip pip.

  • I have one bike and 2 sets of wheels. An Orbea Onix with full Chorus. I have Neutron Ultras for racing/sportives/good weather and some Zondas for the winter. Only downer is you have to clean, dismantle and grease a lot in winter.

One?! Is that - Gulp! - less than two?
    I don't do one.

I've got one road bike that I use all year round, been building it up myself and only cost £200 so far so nothing special!

I do also have a crappy old mountain bike (cost about £40 5 years ago) thats falling apart but only because if I fancy cycling to the shops/uni/gym (all within 5/10 minutes cycling) I don't want to lock my road bike up outside, whereas I wouldn't be too upset were the MTB to be nicked!
  • I might just about do it if I had a good road frame with mudguard mounts and was allowed a couple of pairs of wheels. But then I wouldn't really want to leave it locked up at the station every day so no, sorry.... not possible :D

Same here - in theory I could do a lot of my cycling just using the 'cross bike with a tyre/wheel swap where needed and some Race Blades for winter on the road and tri-bars for TTing. But as it has lots of flashy bits fitted (Mavic derailleurs, Middleburn cranks, Sintema carbon fork, etc.) I wouldn't fancy using it for trips to Sainsburys!

I have 3 bikes, 2 of which will be going to Manchester, my winter bike will stay here, but when I come home for Christmas my CAAD9 will come home too. I was going to not use the CAAD9 through winter, but I've decided to now, I'm going to be installing a new chain and jockey wheels soon and if I keep it clean I hope nothing will go wrong, however I do expect the BB to go, one side seems to be rough at the moment when you turn it when no chainset is on. If my CAAD9 turns into a disaster this winter then I'll be using my winter bike next winter.

    Get some Crud Roadracer mudguards.

Turns your BestBike(tm) into a fully MGC effort! Just fitted some on my Litespeed (which, to be fair, isn't the BestBike(tm)) and they are sooper dooper!

    Whats with the trademarking? lol

I'm not worried about wet in winter, winter destroys all your components more than wet in summer I heard, due to salt. And I'm a little nervous, my genesis fell apart in Manchester, cost me hundreds, don't want the same happening again.

I don't have a "winter bike" anymore. My ribble is now a light tourer/commuter and I'm not going to be using it for "training".

I'm going to use my Nero Corsa over the Winter, hopefully I'll have the money (at least by next spring) for a new nice bike.

You ever seen a Carmichael TrainingPlan(tm) in a book?!?

I need to trademark as much as possible before he does...

Was this thread supposed to be entitled "Just one More Bike"

  • I've got 3 bikes but only one that I use for training, club rides, sportives etc etc all through the year. In winter I am careful to clean it after just about every ride to remove salt.

I have got seven bikes in total including five road bikes. three are 531 frames of varying quality, one is aluminium and one carbon. The non-road bikes are total carp and the road bikes probably cost me no more than 2 grand in total. But I have a bike for every occasion.
Though there is always room for one more...

Oh, and I've got another roadbike- a Carbolite 103 Peugeot steely-it's nearly new but I never liked it as it was as lifeless as anything.

    Don't do it

....and if you do then don't tell my wife.

Seriously though I can think of two VERY good reasons.

    1. Getting your BestBike(tm) (Thanks to NapD for the loan there) out in March feels REALLY good. Not having ridden it all winter is something to look forward to and savour.
    2. Getting your WinterBike (tm) (That one's mine) out in October feels REALLY good. Not having ridden it all summer is something to look forward to and savour.
