Will you use your best bike through winter ?

At the moment I've only got one bike, so I don't have much choice. I bought it in December last year and rode it through the winter (without mudguards or anything), but that didn't seem like a good idea. I had to replace both tyres in less than a thousand miles: they were fairly slick Continental 23s, not really suited to winter roads, and got shredded. Also I'm worried about all the salty muck getting into the gears and stuff. I think I need to get a winter hack.0

I have a road bike and an MTB, so on the really nasty days the MTB and all the gear that's meant to get mucky will do just that. If it's just wet and chilly (not freezing and everything covered in salt) then the road bike will be out, just as it was on wet chilly days in the spring and summer.0
