Two way radios for road biking

I quite fancy the idea of being able to chat with my mate when I'm on a ride at times when we can't ride two abreast.
Has anyone out there used a hands free walkie talkie on a bike?

I've searched the web without much success. Not even with Radioshack.

Any suggestions?

You can get them - try hiking/skiing websites.

Better option is to ride on quieter roads though.
  • Ruby, I swear by them.

Just been out to the Alps, and we used them to communicate between each other. Ohh, and there's no call costs like yer mobile !!

We had Binatone Terrain 550, and they had a range of 8km (5 miles), and they do seem to work for that 5 miles.

Have even used them skiing, when my missus was in the next valley, and could still get through to her (ok - get earache off her !).

I know Aldi sometimes do them under a different name, but can't remember what the name is.
Anyway, this is what they look like, and I believe they are headset compatible, so you could get an in-ear headphone with an in-line mic, if you just wanted to leave in yer back pocket. Or tape onto your stem, like I did.

You might find this easier to look for under motorbike kit - quite common there.

What you essentially want (I think) is some PMR radios with a headset, mike and PTT (push to talk button). Some of these will allow you to mount the PTT button on the handlebars too.

Have never done it but am also interested - cant help with which ones or what the pitfalls are I am afraid. Maplins stock all this type of stuff but I dont know if theirs is the best.

A quick search found this http://www.calamander.co.uk/intercoms/m ... btbkit.htm as an example.
  • thanks for the suggestions guys, some of it looks quite helpful.

However there must be someone out there who uses the kit regularly who can suggest a bike ready set-up that's also voice activated as I cant be doing with taping a ptt button on the handlebars.

    Anyone out there????
