not so long ago some loons on here were using Elliot's good performances in the UK to query the standard of premier calendar races...,Russ Downing clearly is not bad well above premier calendar level so maybe UK races are a decent platform?... we don't see any threads over the last month here about Malc though- a fairly interesting story he is...but isn't doping related so doesn't get a mention in pro race. :(

All credit to Elliot..., clearly his performances in Ireland and in ToB show what a low standard of riders there are in those events

You normally make a really interesting contribution here & you've been away for some time....
Can I suggest you read: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12648955 (which is the most replied to thread on the front page, despite not being a doping thread), before slating the alleged bias you perceive?

Malcolm Elliot is someone I respect hugely, but I completely fail to understand your point: are you trying to make a specific point about his history; are you wanting a discussion about his palmares; are you commenting on British elite level racing; are you just slating this forum; or are you doing all of these?

Some of those would be interesting threads, can you let me know what it is & I'll happily join in with most of them?

    Cheers

  • I have to say as someone whom raced against Malcom elliot and with him in the early 80's and beat him on occasions i soon realized he was an exeptional talent but someone whom wasted it and i have no doubt that had he focused more in those days he would have been a Mark cavandish of his day.
And i think now he is more foucused, and the result's he has shown what a talent he still is and could have been and if you read articles he has done in the cycling press he admits as much.
But with that said for his age, and don't forget his age he is a supreme athlete

I think dave_1 is trying to say, in a sarcastic and humerous way, is that maybe the premier calendar is a decent level after all since the riders don't get their arses really kicked by the continental pros and so Elliot is still a force to recond with and not just against second rate opposition.
I raced with him too a few times, but never beat him
  • as you get older you realise what you have wasted in the past and try to make up for it before its too late. I am 34 and feel exactly that way, fairy sure malcs great form in the last few years may have something to do with that (grant you I am a mere whipper snapper to him!)

yes, exactly...it was incorrect to suggest that premiers were of poor quality cause elliot got good placings in them. Also Downing shows they are a step up.

He looked ok today. He must have some talent to be in there now. He is hugely older than the other baby faces I saw. You wonder whether he was a huge talent who didn't manage to get the best out of himself or whether he did his best and his age has slowly tapered unlike the rest of the human race.

He freely says in an interview a few years back that he didn't apply himself as fully as he could.
Reading the book, wide eyed & legless, about the ANC sponsored team,in the 87 (I think)TDF, there is a tale of Elliott, after a stage finish (In an area he raced at previously as an amateur),going for a drive around town, seeking out some of his old aquaintances.
You'd be VERY unlikely to find a pro even being allowed (by his DS) to do that now :o
