Hello there,

Me n a mate have got pass outs from the wives and kids for first weekend in october for a blast in Ae forest - it's gotta be Ae coz we've booked an uplift for the Saturday - the first time for this sort of uplift caper so naturally we are well up for it and coming from Leeds.

Do any of you lads or lasses know the skinny for camping in this neck of the woods - i.e is there a reasonably MTB friendly camp site (for tents) close by?

Or is Scotland the liberated kind of place where you can pitch up pretty much anywhere you like and have a fire and a good time as long as youre sensible and respectful etc etc etc.

Isn't there something about a "right to roam" in Scotland? - does this extend to "right to camp, light a fire and have a couple of beers"?

Owt you can suggest that would be of help would be grand, ta very much

  • Not too sure how it applies up here mate, but I'd imagine this website would be a good place to start.

  • Have a look at the Ae forest map on 7Stanes site.
Across the river from the biking trails car park is a picnic area, people do camp there occasionally. In behind the old plough display
Some also camp beside the river in the Stanes car park. Both are near the DH track.
There are showers at the cafe http://www.ae7.co.uk/

Please take your litter home with you if you do wild camp.
If you bring it with you, you can take it with you.

    SCOTLAND
scotland is just brilliant for wild camping, the law is different in scotland and wild camping is completely legal and well accepted. the current access legislation is explicit about people's right to camp on hill land - usually more than 100 metres away from a public road, some landowners do take exception, but thankfully they are few and far between. if you're near a dwelling it's also a good idea to ask permission and not just set up camp on their doorstep!

^ we stayed here a couple of months back. Far from wild camping, it has power to the sites, showers and all that. I think you can hire caravans from them aswell, if you don't feel like camping. Pretty easy access to the Western Stanes from there (it's just outside Dumfies)

    and it's got a bar

arf. midges are immune to mere chemicals!

actually, we didn't have a problem, although perhaps that was because it rained so much they all stayed away!
