Advice from Saris Bones 3 Owners Please

I'm looking for a bike rack for my Hyundai Coupe car. It needs to fit over the quite low rear spoiler and the Bones 3 looks idea with 1 concern.

My concern is that all the pictures show its lower feet resting on the horizontal surface of the bumper. My bumper is quite flexible so I'd prefer to rotate the feet by 90 degrees and rest them on the vertical boot wall which is a more rigid metal surface. I'm sure this is how I used to fix an old rack to a previous car and can't see why it won't be secure when the straps are all attached.

Can any Bones 2/3 owners let me know if they use their boot rather than the bumper for the lower feet??

Thanks,

Gavin.

  • the feet rotate slightly , I can put the foot flat onto my bumper ( seat Ibiza ) or rotate them and put them flat against the boot . ( 90 degrees )

I think thats the answer your hoping for ?!? :D

    hope that makes sense !

Yes, that is what I was thinking of. How do you normally fit it (bumper or boot)? Has it scratched your paintwork as some reviews say? Are the adjustment screws still plastic and a potential weakness?

  • I fit it facing into the boot as it feels more secure .

the screws ( mine is couple of years old ) were/are plastic but to be honest once the positions are set I dont make any adjustments to them hence no failure .

best tip is set the bones position up that is right and then use a permament marker to " set " the points on the bones body ( the splinned bit ) so you know where to move the legs to. Although tbh I never collapse mine, it just gets taken off, stuck in storage and ready for use straight off.

never had ANY problems re paint work, the hooks are metal with plastic coating an I suppose they could damage if your over zealous but you would really have to be heavy handed , if I have 3 bikes on board I just put a piece of card under the hooks to provide a bit of spacing.

also , the hooks are clearly labelled top, left , down etc ...you cannot get them wrong !

great piece of kit , I got mine with a free cable and lock ( good quality ) which means I can lock the bones to my car via towing eyelet, ensuring its still there when I get back !

as have said elsewhere, great piece of kit . 2 min to put on , 30 seconds to take off, holds bikes really well ...

and no I dont work for Saris !

Thanks for the info, you seem to be using just as I would. Now I just need to toss up between the sleek looking Bones 3 and the functional but cheaper Sentinel 3.

spend the extra and get the bones ...it seems a lot at first but you benefit long term ,

you can ever colour code for car ! although I went for yellow so there is no missing it from the driver behind perspective !

see if you can find one with a cable lock, if not factor into costs buying one.

the amount of positve comments I have had about the rack is good ..but it also makes me wonder how many people would like to " borrow " it when Im off cycling !

  • Got a Saris Bones 2 and it's great and always get's compliments when i take the bikes off.

Never had any vehicle damage and i agree with the other guys in that i never collapse it so it's a 2 minute job to put on.

    Worth the investment longterm.
