Chainset - Fulcrum vs Campag

Are the Fulcrum and Campag chainsets basically the same thing?
RSS = Record
RS = Chorus
R = Centaur
... or something like that?
I'm planning to upgrade the good bike to the new Ultegra 6700, but the cranks are horrid.
Like the Campag ones, but never feels right mixing Shimano and Campag..

I wouldn't recommend an ultratorque chainset. I've had a carbon compact one and it was a fail.
The ultratorque system is a bit of a bodge.
The compact BCD is a pain too (4x110mm and 1x113mm) meaning no choice in replacement chainrings and they are expensive too.
IMHO you're better off sticking with a Shimano or FSA chainset.0 -

Any further info to qualify that mate?
I have Fulcrum chainsets on both my bikes (RRS on one, R on the other) with no problems at all from either setup (both are matched to Campag Record).0 -

Some interesting 'facts' (opinions) on that link mate - it's worth reading through the WHOLE page - there are quite a few disagreements with the OP's theory though.0

When Ultratorque works, it works really well. But the chainrings and BB can cause problems that are massively difficult to fix compared to the majority of other manufacturers.
I definitely wouldn't buy a compact again though, the chainring issue is just stupid - I'd go for the 135mm version.
(PS my cheapo Gossamer c/set is stiffer and has far far better chainrings the Centaur c/set that cost twice the price)0 -
Red it's not like FSA cranks haven't had their issues, even if your
experience is good... Also compacts can be a PITA for other reasons (a 16T jump will never run as well as 14T though 36/50 is a reasonable setup)
I've run Record, Chorus, DA, Force, Rival and FSA cranks.
DA are my favourites and Record/Chorus second. I prefer the slightly narrower Q-factor with Campag cranks (though that's personal) and they look great. They are harder to change than DA but depends how often you plan on changing them. I've had no problems at all with UT though if you are using pressfit bearings they can take some careful fitting to avoid squeaking.
If you're getting 6700, one of the higher end Fulcrum cranksets (which are very very similar to the Campag cranks) would be a good option. Which you choose will depend mostly on how much you want to spend. If there's nothing else you can do to improve you or your bike, you might want to splurge for ceramic bearings and saving a few grams! There will be little functional difference to a Campag crank but Fulcum/6700 will go together better if you care about that.0 -
Ultratorque has to be fitted correctly and there is the problem. Not everyone realises that all the bits are there for a purpose. TA do alternative rings cheaper and compatible. The new Shimnano rings are expensive £100+ for the hollow chainrings on DA/Ultegra. Fulcrum is a division of Campagnolo like Pro is to ShimanoM.Rushton0

IMHO The Fulcrum RRS look better than the Campag equivalent, however, the Fulcrum Rs look a little on the cheap side for me - I bought them for my Orbea, rode them for 100m until my RRS arrived and then swapped them out. The Rs are now on my winter bike while the RRSs have pride of place on the good bike0

What total bollox. I have Super Record on one bike, Record on another and Chorus on a third (I also have a bike running Ultegra FWIW) and have never had any problems with the chainsets, BBs or cranks on any of them. I think there are quite a few satisfied users and many pros who hammer the life out of ultra torque with no issues whatsoever.0 -

It's not bollocks. I've never had issues with the BB either on my Centaur, but the chainring issue is the main sticking point for me.
Being an engineer I see things other people won't - but the issue is real.
Price/performance you can't really beat a Dura Ace c/set TBH.0 -

That why I use a cheapo FSA Gossamer chainset now - cheaper, stiffer, easier BB to maintain, and stiffer chainrings that are cheaper to replace. I'd rather ride than worry about the piece of crap chainset.0 -
How would something like SRAM Force compare?0
