If you've got the buget The North Face Venture is just about light enough and plenty dry and brethable for riding (resolve is a lot hotter but cheaper) I got my jacket and trousers for winter dune/fell running (and work so the cost wasn't that bad) but have used them a few times on the bike and they are super dry and comfortable.-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford? :roll:0 -
The Aldi jacket- if it's the same as last time- is pretty much the definition of unbreathable, I wear mine for commuting but it's not much use for long rides unless it's freezing. That's the balance really, between getting wet from rain and wet from sweat. But that's easier to deal with in winter since it'll be colder. Breathable waterproof jackets tend not to come cheap though :?
I just wear shorts myself, I've tried riding trousers but I get on better with shorts, wet legs just don't bother me as much as the feeling of riding in trousers. Especially once they get plastered with mud!Uncompromising extremist0 -
If you are going down the golf suit road. Try and avoid Donay. I bought one years ago (For golf) it was raining so put on said suit. At the end I would have been better off in the rain. They make you sweat like a chubba in a sauna.0

Decent properly breathable jacket is well worth paying for.Save money by using non cycle specific base layers,by all means but a decent jacket is a must.
I have a Gill Prospeed which is excellent, its now been rebranded as a DHB Wickham, but the Altura Crosslite is also worth a look.Anything less is boil in the bag.....
I always suffer from cold toes too so last winter got some Endura overshoes which have been a godsend.2006 Giant XTC

I'd add Altura Nevis to that list. It's good for the money.0
