Got a weekend up in the White Peak coming up, staying with friends near Astonefield, so was wondering if there are any good routes nearby. Dont really want to travel too far and will probably only have four or five hours at a time. Thanks a lot.

  • Hello Matt

where is astonefield? cannot find it on os map. May be able to help when I find it
  • He presumably means Alstonefield, which is to the north west of Ashbourne. Manifold valley direction. Watch out for the speed cameras in Waterhouses...at the bottom of a road steep enough to have sand-pit escape route, and set at 30.1 mph it seems...
  • its about 15 miles south of Buxton if that helps

  • Some decent tracks around the Alstonefield and the Manifold/Dove area. To get you started - there is a short but interesting one between Stanshope and Dale Bottom, about a mile south of Alstonefield.

In terms of routes, you could do one northwards to Beresford Dale, Biggin Dale, Cardlemere Lane and one westwards to the Wetton Mill, Grindon, Thowley and Rushley. Best thing to do would be to buy a map and go exploring.
  • I haven't done this one so no warranty is implied.

Let me know what you think to it if you give it a go.
  • Well Matt what can I say, with all these routes above, your location and an os map you are spoilt for choice! Its a lovely area for all things bike, think I may have to have another look around that way, its been a few years since I last explored it :)

If you have a GPS or memory map I can send you the routes when they have been put onto my pc.

Is there a seperate area on this forum for sharing routes for use on gps?

    :)
  • If you click share on the bikely route menu you can download .gpx

the bikely/bike radar routes are the same thing

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions, sound good so i'll grab an OS map for the area. Does anyone know if the nearby section of the pennine bridleway is any good?

  • Hi Matt, I rode parts of Pennine bridleway today. It was this route here http://www.mountainbikerides.co.uk/routes/jacobs.htm
    Absolutely awesome route.

It all depends on if you can get that far north to hope/edale area but its worth it. The views from Mam Tor are good. I saw quite a few other riders as well so its a popular area.
  • Jacobs is miles from Alstonefield. Save that for when you go and stay at Edale.

The Pennine Bridleway between Middleton and Buxton follows a disused railway and is pancake flat. If that is what you are after, the Tissington Trail runs north from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay and is loose surfaced. The Manifold way goes from Waterhouses down the Hamps and up the Manifold to Hulme End. It is tarmac.
