Nasty sounding weather.

Break with Cunego 8 minutes up the road.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

Eurosport live earlier than scheduled. Good job Ronnie O'Sullivan was in the snooker final.
  • Raining....Cunego will walk it.
    After that......
Decending could become a factor. Sanchez will be smiling, I'd guess Basso won't.

Descending? There's not much of that left:

31 km to go, so they're near the top of that little lump before the final climb.

    Cunego will walk it.
Watch for De Weert and Fuglsang.

...but if the favourites start going for it early that 6 minute lead can melt.

You are a king :D Thanks man!!

PS, I didn't set my Sky + to go until 4.30 as I saw the eurosport schedule. Seems like they started much earlie indeed, what time was it?

    3 o'clock.

Did I just imagine it or did I just see a CdE rider going the wrong way?! Can't you get DQed for that?

Gesink... where is he? Nowhere near the front.

Edit: Never mind, that flipping white jersey caught me out again. Most. Pointless. Jersey. Ever.

How weird was that getting dropped looking a broken man using a huge gear, body all over the place and then all of a sudden found his legs and ended up putting time into all but Sanchez and Mosquera!!

Basso has the makings of a great domestique, able to ride hard at a steady pace in the mountains... but not able to put in an incisive attack, nor to resist the other contenders when they attack.

I'm joking, he is up there with the best but still needs some more racing in his legs but he does seem to be too much of a diesel at the moment.
  • Much improved performance from Cava Gran Ducay

Joking? Sounds pretty much nail-on-head to me. When Szmyd pulled over and Basso attacked, it looked as if his speed barely increased.

With Pellizotti and Nibali and Kreuziger all capable of leading a GT team, how much longer will Liquigas stick with Basso? He's just not the same rider... for obvious reasons.
  • Great ride from Sammy and Ezequiel again. Let's see what Sammy can do in the TT.
Happy that Fuglsang is back - I think he's top 20 now.

Well, I was being mean. I think there's room for improvement but then the likes of Kreuziger and Nibali are on the up too. Pellizotti's already said "I want to be the capo in the Giro" so if Basso wants the Tour team for himself, he's going to have to earn the respect of Nibali and Kreuziger otherwise Liquigas will become the new T-Mobile, too many chefs etc.
  • Just checked, he's 34th

I was thinking exactly the same thing. He just does not have any kind of kick what so ever and he can no longer ride people off his wheel; therefore he is just pacing everyone up the climb before they then jump him later on.

I feel sorry for Smyd...he is such an impressive rider who always rides his heart out for his leader but how good would he be riding for himself?? The dauphine the last few years where he has been riding with the top guys shows his climbing ability is right at the top level, but perhaps like Basso, lacks that extra something special that is needed to be a team leader. Perfect domestique for Bertie I think.
  • Well.......Cunego walked it.
Samu is definitely becoming the main threat.
I remember how strong a third week he rode, back in 2007.
He's got some downhill finishes to come.
Friday's mountain stage and the ITT are in his favour and we all know about Valverde's third week fuel defecits.

  • Valverde was asked by the TV guys "How much of the vuelta do you think you have in the bag?"

    70% he said.

Another excellent ride by Cunego at least Harmon and Kelly are now recognising his obvious talent for stage bagging and one day races and desisting from the snidey comments from earlier in the race. That said i find it a bit strange they made a big deal him losing time yesterday to allow him leeway to go in the break today, riders have been doing that for donkeys years it aint a new thing
Gasping - but somehow still alive !

I think Szmyd looks good as a domestique when he give it his all and then pulls over and knocks it off but that is vastly different from having to be in there at the business end of the race when the GC is up for grabs whether he has that kind of ability i am not so sure.
