Do the MBR, or Dragons back, the Beast is just a long slog for not much in return. Its 7km longer than the Dragons back and its 7km of fire-road ups and downs as far as i'm concerned. The Tarw is also good but short.

Tarw is longer than MBR

But otherwise, do as ibbo suggests. My favourite trail is a toss-up between the Dragon's back and Tarw, but they're all so damned good!
Beast is pretty much all of MBR + all of Dragon's Back.

I'm curious though, where do you live, if you've been to "all the other biggies" but are an hour away from CYB?
How much closer can you possibly be to anywhere else? :?
I live near Bangor, which means I'm pretty much an hour away from any of Llandegla, CYB, a little under an hour from Marin + Penmachno etc.
  • I live in Hawarden so Im about 40 mins from the marin and penmachno but have never ventured to coed y brenin. llandegla is about 15 mins away.

ah, I see. Coed y Brenin is definitely worth it. It makes Llandegla look like road-riding.

    I am confused?

Everything i have read on here raves about MBR & the dragons back but the beast gets a bit of slating, but the beast is also quoted as being the MBR + The dragons back?

I am heading upi to CYB at the end of the month, which of the trails would be best for a cold wet november? do they all hold up in the wet?

All the trails hold up fine in the wet, they could be said to be the perfect example of resilient trail building.
HOWEVER, the rocky and rooty sections can be as slippery as greased up teflon ice in the wet!

I live not far from you and only been to CYB once so far: we did the beast as it was the longest distance, what i liked about it was the variaty of surfaces and if your driving an hour each way may as well spend as long as possible riding.

will be back to try tarw at some point

Where do you ride near home?

Do you travel by helicopter?

Well the Beast and MBR are closed for a few months from 20th November so I guess it will have to be the Dragons Back or Tarw. (I would do the Dragons Back).

    Or do both.... :D

Some of the MBNW crew are planning on doing that today.

The Beast is essentially MBR+Dragon's Back (minus the Dream Time section) but the two routes overlap fair bit as well which is why the Dragon's Back isn't much shorter than the Beast.
  • Coed Y Brenin is about 40 miles from me, im also weary about driving through North Wales as its were speed cameras go to breed. the urge to go will always be there though.

Don't worry bout the Speed Cameras. I used to train the new Chief Constable when he was a probationer Constable in the City of London Police, and we used to do Martial Arts together. He's a really nice guy overall.
Just send the ticket to me and I'll sort it out! LOL!

    Bullcrap.
I'd put money on most people living in North Wales having never seen a GATSO.
Somebody tells someone else, who tells someone else that North Wales has it bad with speed cameras, and then soon enough, it's accepted as a fact.

    ^^+1

I'm struggling to think of where I've seen one here. Some of the only places your going to get pulled are the 50mph zone through Colwyn Bay on the A55 and the slip road at Bangor, they love to sit there.

Move to Swindon if you don't like Speedcameras, the council have binned all the GATSO's
    Niner Air 9 Rigid
    Whyte 129S 29er.
  • The biggest problem is the 'Arrive Alive' vans.

Basically transit vans with cameras in the back, they try and park in the most awkward b*stard places to catch you, like at the bottom of a hill in a 30mph zone.

Most motorists coming the other way will flash to slow you down though, so look out for that.
  • see, im not the only one
  • Nah no camera's up there i often welly around the A470 and all at silly speed no problems

We only film English number plates! LOL!
Well, my dad's from the Isle of Wight/Portsmouth, and they done me 3 - 4 times, so it must be true...

The Marin, CYB, Penmachno...as good as the stuff I rode in BC/Alberta/Montana, and a bit closer/cheaper than the Pacific North West.
( Don't be afraid of the police...Sting says they'll never get back together again. )

WoW! Did the Dragons back last week for the first time.......Chuffing loved it, I thought it was getting a bit boring with all the fire road but then we got to the Adams Family!! Well worth the climb! Had a couple of close calls with the Rock sections but survived intact which was a bonus!

Can't wait to go again soon!

I would agree the NW camera vibe, moved back to Chester 3 years ago and it was very noticeable. And they have stopped updating the Arrive Alive website with the schedules.

Back on the bike this week and loved Llandegla, CYB looks like another great place near to me (Chester) but not ready for the longer runs yet.

If anyone is travelling up around Dec 27th the Mountain Biking North Wales forum are having a group ride of Dragon's Back and would welcome more people.

hehe, I love teh addams family section, perfect flowiness, pretty straightforward, but also good fun if you want to push it really hard as well.
