GT or Mongoose?

I am a beginner looking to buy between the following (2) mountain bikes:

GT '09 Avalanche 2.0

or

Mongoose '09 Tyax Super

They're both $599 with an additional 20% off. Would anyone recommend one over the other?

    I'd go for the Avalanche, that said, I dont think you'd regret buying either. Test ride them and see what you think.

    Very similar geometry and weight etc.. the Mongoose has better forks (just) and hydro brakes, it would be my choice if both bikes cost the same.

    i have a GT avalanche 3 '09 and the bike has been nothing but perfection. Im a new biker but the bike i had before this was a very cheap bike with cheap parts which thought it was in the big boy league.

    So my advice after riding a GT Avalanche 3 '09 is to go for GT and ENJOY

    i have a tyax, an 09 super in black and love it.

    great ride and im glad i chose it as a first "itro" bike :)
