Hey
I am making a school project and I need some advice from bikers. The idea that I have had is to create a bike station so that you can put ur bike up on the wall for general storage and for maintence at eye level. There would also be shelves attached for tools and biking equipment etc......
Thank you for reading and your comments :D:D

  • Good idea. You mean like a wall mounted clamp with extra hooks and compartments for helmet, tools and spares?

I guess the most important thing would be to design it so that the storage elements don't get in the way when you're using it to work on the bike. Most important element that I feel is missing from every repair stand I've seen is a cup holder. I'm not kidding. I never work on my bike without coffee, this usually gets placed under the bike somewhere and ends up having everything from tube caps to chain lube dropped in. Chain lube tastes terrible.

Also, and this is really important: it's your, never ur, which is a prefix meaning original or archetypal. It's also the name of an ancient city in Iraq.
  • i always thought an attatchment like the above for black and decker work benches would be a good moneyspinner - ......just a thought.......

  • One major problem that I can see is the lack of access to the "other" side of the bike - the side that close up against the wall. When I'm using a normal workstand I'm bobbing about between sides all the time. If one side was against the wall this wouldn't be possible, unless the bike was held a long way off the wall. This would then need serious metalwork to hold 30lbs or so some distance from the wall. Could make it expensive, and it would need heavy duty fixings. Think you might be better redesigning the current free standing models, all of which have some flaws in their design.

Make sure the clamp doesn't mark the frame - obvious but most that i've used do. Along the same lines, remember that some bikes have cables that run along the top tube which can get in the way of some clamps. I'd definitely like more shelves to hold tools (and a cup holder - a priceless addition!) too.
  • Some kind of fold away swing arm to hold the bike during maintenance?

How about building a lock into it so you can be happy in the knowledge that your bike is safely secured to the wall?

I'm making this an expensive project now

Can you build me one?

Make some bike lights from LEDs! Half your reasearch is already done in the sticky here ;-)
  • dont forget the ipod docking station, adjustable arms for funny FS frames. maybe you dont have to build those two things just show designs for them. cup holder is a must
fly like a mouse, run like a cushion be the small bookcase!

  • If you designed a hanging system from the ceiling of your garage, (of which there are plenty of offerings), you could winch it up out of the way or lower it to work on all sides. Aldi do a cheap winch which was just two pulleys mounted to the ceiling, and a long bit of rope from pulley one, to seat, to bars, to pulley two, to a fixing bracket for tieing off. You could add a second pulley to lift the bike horizontally so that it is flat across the ceiling thus well out of the way - front wheel would need to be removed.
The best thing would be to motorise the pulleys so your press a button and it lowers into 'work stance' 8)

Much cheaper than a full work bench, easier to package + ship + manufacture, you could make a quick-release tool tray to clip to the seatpost...
