Hey, just had a conversation with a collegue about our bikes of yesteryear and we were all smiles at the mention of Tioga tyres.

Anyone remember Farmer John's Nephew,Cousin or Uncle? One was a brute of a tyre and my favourite, but I can't remember which one.

  • I think it was the cousin, if i remember rightly the adverts always had johnny tomac covered in mud on them....... had a set on my muddy fox courier - how i loved that bike....... :)

  • Muddy Fox Courier Comp. Now that was a bike I craved when I was riding a Raleigh Mustang.

I also remember buying a Panaracer Storm Contro tyrel. It was like having Wine Gums for tread.
  • Still got my Courier Comp in my garage. A bit battered but nothing a bit of TLC wouldnt fix. Used to have the muddy fox paw disc on the rear wheel to, but I think thats lost forever. Old school bikes 8) Still got the origional front tyre but I think its got an Onza Rip on the rear.
  • Hey Phil,

That disc made the bike I think !!! The stuff dreams are made of.

    Nice one!
  • they were farmer johns uncle. Had a pair on the raleigh discovery until last year when the sidewalls finally went on the front.

I had a farmer johns nephew on a Makro BSO, it was more angular than the regular farmer john.

My fave MTB tyre ever was Panaracer Dart 2 I got given it at Bike 96 and it had the best lateral grip of any front tyre ever, not so great breaking in the snow though, but the tread direction was so good you just slid in a straight line.

    It was green too 8)

    Voodoo Bizango - 2014 - Dead - Hit by a car
    Vitus Sentier VRS - 2017
  • I think you will all find that the front tyre was a 'Farmer John' and the rear one was 'Farmer John's Cousin' feckin mint tyres, my mate swore by them but nowhere we could find round here stocked em, so i always used to run 'Tioga Psycho & Psycho II's' till i discovered 'Panaracer Fire XC PROs'

I had a set of Farmer John's on my bike when i was a teenager at school, they were ok but nothing special i thought especially when it came to cornering. The tractor tire type tread was good but they dint really have any side tread so it was always a bit hair raising in the damp or wet i always thought.

The tires i always wanted was a set of Panaracer Timbuktu's if anyone remembers them, back in the day they were the most aggressive looking tires i'd ever seen on a bike but ive never seen a set anywhere even online since. Its a shame cos they looked great with nice beefy side lugs. Panaracer replaced them the Smoke which went out of production a few years later but is now back in production again so i spose theres always hope for the timbuktu's :D

  • Go on what an old skool tyre they look cool lol, we always thought the name was the coolest one ever, and fair play for still rocking the psychos dude 8)

Face facts guys... If it's an old tyre and it doesn't have "Smoke" or "Dart" written on it, it sucks

    Never a truer word.

Though I did have Omega Bites. An Kona Scratch 'n' Sniff!
  • Just had a look at the uncles, but mine were totally different. Still had the same opposing tread pattern, but no gaps in the tread either side and the tread extended over the side more, wonder if they were a Halfords special?

I remember those... made of the softest compound rubber known to mankind... used to last about 4 or 5 miles but looked awesome...

Personally, while we're on a retro theme I always lusted after those purple anodised cranks (Ringles Speed Sticks I think they were called)... with matching brakes!

I still have a Saracen 'Hydrotech' that had Farmer John, and Farmer John's cousin on.
It was my first mountain bike. It didn't take very long to realise that the rear had naff all grip for drive on anything more than Tarmac.
Then I discovered Specialised ground control and my riding was revolutionised.
I took it all the way to San francisco and soon realised the Magura rim brakes were good for trials, but sh*t for descents - they went the same way as my 'Wienmann' road brakes, well I sold em on ebay - back to the states!
Now it has a massive WTB ?Timberwolf? on the back and something old on the front and serves as an occasional log carrier.

Of more interest is how all those random words managed to resurrect a four year old post.

I remember WTB Velociraptor on my 1998 Orange P7, one of the few tyres I actually wore out rather than cutting to death.

Velociraptors are really hard wearing. On going down to see my younger brother in Devon I teated my unemployed mate to a pair of these from a little bike shop over the road from where we were staying.

He said one of the best tyres he ever rode on, not bad considering I get the pair of them for £24
