Would a person convert a Gary Fisher 2008 Marlin to a fixie and use it to commute on a canal towpath each day, what would be the benefit ?

I have found just such a rider but he's not a talker or is Ipod plugged and doesn't hear as a quickly ride past him.

Middle of the Pennines so he's either a valley bottom dweller or pushes it up the hills.

    Why not?
  • I dont know the bike but I ride a rigid Inbred as my commuter every day (sometimes even on a tow path). I dont see that I am causing any harm by my actions.....

  • OK I checked it out - its a low end GF bike with a bad suspension fork - probably lighter without the fork and possibly even a better ride! All explained. Good on him. Looks like it takes a rack too - always handy a rack.

Fixies are about the most inefficient forms of cycling there is. At least with freewheeling SS you can save some energy.

Give the guy this link to make sure he's dressed appropriately.

Damn straight. This is the MTB section, we'll have no fixie bullshit here.
  • No bashing, I just need to know what the benefit would be, I am guessing he's just a trendy youth.

apart from the whole cockney gay pirate thing with fixies thats sprung up..as a commuter a striped down bike makes sense as its maintenace free and cheap to keep running...as you sure its fixie, or not just SS
