Bib shorts for a tall rider

I'm currently on the look-out for a pair of bib shorts that aren't going to hurt my 'undercarriage'.

I'm 6'2 with a relatively long back. I've been trying a pair of the large Giordana Tenax Laser A413's which I've found to be very uncomfortable. Although it's difficult to put my finger on it, I'm pretty sure it's due to the straps being a bit too tight, therefore some areas of the padding are riding up a bit too high, which in turn promotes a fair bit of friction.

Apart from this issue, they are nice shorts which feature a good amount of padding, and are of good quality. I was thinking about trying an XL version, but I think the shorts would be far too loose - currently everything is a good fit, except for the short straps.

So, I'm appealing for suggestions from people who are a bit on the tall side who have found that perfect pair of shorts! I'd be tempted to get some Assos if people came back with some positive feedback on them, or something within that price bracket.

Thanks for your help!

  • I use Wiggle's DHB Bib shorts (£35). Find that they do a good job for me.

Maybe a bit of cream on your shoulders under the straps, and especially on your undercarriage, should help too.
  • I'm 6'2 but quite slim. I think quite a lot of my height's in my legs, so perhaps I don't have as much of an issue on length as you. I found it really hard to get bib shorts that weren't saggy in the bottom or tight around the shoulders. In the end I bought some Trek Criterium shorts in medium. They're not too tight on the shoulders (for me) but they're not baggy either; I'm pretty happy with them.

Italian/French brands tend to be designed for the shorter man (so the straps are too small). American brands tend to be more generously sized, but can be more generous all around (producing the baggy bottom problem).

The only thing you can do really is go into a shop (or several) and try lots of different brands in lots of different sizes. I tried just about everything of offer in three different shops before arriving at some that felt right.
