I am a creature of the night

I realise this is no help to some people and I don't want to boast, but this year, more than ever, I am really REALLY enjoying riding off-road at night. So much so that at the weekend I didn't go out in the day just so I could go out at night

The local loops are magic in the dark and the presence (but not intrusion) of other like-minded MTBrs means there's always a bit of banter when we cross paths. The twinkling lights shooting downhill, moving slowly uphill and the sounds of chains slapping and brakes squealing in the woods makes night riding an absolute blast.

If you're toying with the idea of getting some lights, don't hesitate.

I am trying to get the other half into it but she doesn't fancy it.

I have to admit that I prefer to ride the forestry trails in the dark rather than the open wild trails. It seems so much faster and much more of a buzz.

All you can see is the tunnel of trail that shows up in the light infront and everything that you can crash into or edges you can drop off are in the dark margins. If you cant see the dangers they dont bother you so you seem to smash it even quicker, makes you a very cocky rider. You can't beat it!

Couldn't agree more. I went out the other night and it was pitch black by the time I was riding back and loved every second of it :D

I've been trying to talk myself into buying some more powerful light but the lights I have at the moment seem to do the job.

I run a niterider minewt on the bars and one on my helmet and they are fine. I run the more powerful one on my helmet and the other on my bars switching between the 2. bars only for fire road climbs and helmet only for singletrack. I find it easier to follow the helmet light rather than bars on singletrack.

last winter I had the loan of some Seca 700's from my LBS to try. They were bright but pricey to go with it.

I love night riding... We do regular wednesday night rides and they're fine during the summer but I missed the dark. And especially the sunsets! I don't think it's better, it's just different.

Just bolted me torches back on the bike, took my son out for his first night run out over the local bomb pits, he loved it, mind you the run ins take on a totally different in the dark!
Nearly got eaten by a holly tree on one of them lol
    Told ya itll hurt!
  • I've been really enjoying it too. I need to get a head torch to go with the handlebar light though! I do love looking back and seeing a string of lights behind me. And even trails I know well are a real challenge in the darkness. :D

Just got back from what was meant to be a night ride. Got cancelled due to someone else's bad organizing skills. So, cycled home, changed my shoes, put a few extra bits in my camalbak, put mtb back in the garage, bmx out, cycled the 7 miles to the nearest bmx track, and spent the evening there. Still a night ride, sort of.

Great fun though. Evening saved, I think. :D
