How about trying to get in on a hospital appointment - Guy's hospital in London does dentistry - I had my wisdom teeth out there - maybe there's a hospital near you that you could just turn up at.

In the meantime crunch soluble pain killers with the offending tooth - you'll get short term benefit
  • What painkillers have you tried? I tried the usual 2 x 200mg Ibuprofen with 2 x Paracetamol and it didn't work. I was then told that 1 x 400mg Ibuprofen was (somehow) stronger than 2 x 200mg. I was dubious, but tried it and it worked.

    A+E if it's that bad...
  • I called the emergency dentist but can't get an appointment 'til tomorrow afternoon. Great emergrncy dentist  Called the dental access thing and they said that's the best they can do. Have not taken that many painkillers though, just the recommended dose of paracetomol which has done no good so i'm off down the shop to get some 400mg Ibuprofen, cheers for the suggestion

I think that 200mg is the strongest you can buy over the counter in the UK.

I always get a good supply of 800mg Ibuprofen when visiting Spain. Bought over the counter, cheap as chips, too :D:D ...

  • You can get 400mg over the counter but you have to ask the pharmacist for it - they keep it behind the counter but no prescription needed.

There are emergency dental clinics in hospitals in most towns/cities.

Ring NHS direct to get details of where your nearest emergency clinic is. You can just turn up.

    Sorry Stef, it's miserable!

I presume you have contacted the Salaried Dental Service at the Riverside Health Centre
    01225 474243

If the pain gets too much and no appt, contact your GP or go to A&E and get some DF118 / dihydrocodeine.

(A cautionary tale: I once had to get emergency trt, dentist said I needed a filling, had local aneasthetic and filling, pain went . . . till anaesthetic wore off! It was another tooth causing the prob).
  • you need something with codeine in it for toothache-co-codamol for example

ecstasy is supposedly the best painkiller for toothache

  • Ok, cheers Alphablue, just called them and they said i can go down at 16.50 :D
Also taken some ibuprofen and thats soothed it for now. The offending tooth was broken a coupple of years ago when i bit to vigerously into a kebab with a bit of bone in it or something, i told them to rip it out but they said it would be fine. Low and behold it must have rotted or something, anyhoo thanks alot for the replies this time i'm going to say to just rip it out, there's only a small piece of my actual tooth anyway, and the root, which i assume has become infected or something. Dunno why they said tomorrow earlier though :? Many thanks again :)

    Good luck!
  • Ouch. I had thisa few months ago, broken tooth, didn't see to it, got infected. The pain was incredible.

The only way to sort it is to get it out, but meantime alternate between Paracetamol and Ibuprofen (2 Paracetamol, then two hours, then 2 Ibuprofen, two hours, 2 Paracetamol...)

The worst thing for me was I went to a dentist and she tried to remove the remainder of the tooth, but she didn't have the strength to get it out and left me with a very broken tooth and double the pain. Cue a sleepless and agonising night and me queuing up outside Whtechapel Hospital at 6am in the morning.

Good luck, I feel your pain.

    Look after your teeth kids!

This probably isn't going to help

Stefano - find yourself a good dentist and go every six months. Make sure it is a good one (even if more expensive) with lots of gadgets (that your bill pays for) - that way, even when you do need a bit of a session, it shouldn't actually cause much suffering. I've had a root canal done and even that didn't really hurt.
