Hi folks, i'm looking to do some xc this winter and would like some reccomendations on the best pedal set ups and shoes..

I'm a roadie at heart but played around on an old mountain bike last winter and loved it!
I got specialized singlecross for commuting, but it's time for the commute tyres to come off and get the knobblies back on!

I'll probably be getting off the bike for some steeper sections so i'll be wanting grippy soles, but what's the best type of pedals for ease of clipping in and out quickly, but still have a positive feel?

Any help much appreciated!

  • for me Time pedals all the way. The only downside is they are a bit lardy (Crank Bros are lighter) but the bearings last and last and you get great engagement with lots of knee friendly float.

as for shoes, I usually just choose something from the Shimano range. They work and are cheap enough to replace every season without fretting(wet muddy shoes = short life before being too stinky to keep IME)

If you want something more racy shoe wise then Sidis are good. I've not used proper racing shoes in years though.
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

    +1

Got some Shimano M520s and got a good deal on some Specialized BG Expert MTB shoes. Great combo.
    Eyes on the prize.
  • Cheers for the info guys!

My LBS stock Specialized shoes so i'll go in and have a look with these in mind!

If you are riding through winter you can't go wrong with Shimano's Goretex winter boots. Not cheap, but then Goretex never is. Worth every penny though. As for pedals I'd go for Shimano M520s as they are cheap and they just work forever
