cheers guys. Cash isn't quite that tight. I should have given a budget.

I can prob go to about £55-£60.

A few mates were tellign me to go for Chris King but that's over budget.

Is it worth paying uptp £60 or am i as well to stick to £20-£30. and save for a CK for next time ?

I have tried a few different headsets over the years, going from cheap to expensive. I have found the best one for price and quality Is FSA pig, It's a little weighty but I have had heavier, but It's smooth strong and about £15 on CRC, both my bikes are running It at the moment.
It's not a ornament, so ride It

My current FSA has lasted about 12 months so at £15 would make it just over £1 a month. I can live with that !!
  • The sunline v1 xc version is only £16 nomally £40 I think and the v1 Downhill/Allmountain is £18 normally £55.

Why pay more, I've just bought one and it seems good quality just need to get a frame for it now!

headsets are one of those things where you dont actually feel any performance difference when you spend more but they should last longer i suppose. (although the question is how often dos anyone kill a headset?)

i really like hope ones, i have one fitted to my enduro and as soon as i kill the one fitted to my stumpy, i will get one for that too. they are very nicely made and in my opinion, worth the money.

i have owned a chris king one and i dont see where the money goes to be honest, i dont see how it would last longer than a hope one.

the only thing i like to make sure of when buying a new headset is that it comes with a split crown race for easier fitting.

You would have hated the Old Hope headsets.

    sound like a fitting mare.

i wouldnt knowingly buy a headset wihtout a split race ever again, i dont know why they arent all made this way.

lose ball ones can not be.

and now they are not really races just locating/centering rings.

    agreed.

i did think about just cutting a regular crown race but wondered if it would spring open and become useless.

Can't do better then Chris King, and its right on your budget. 2nd hand ones can be got off ebay for as little as £45.

I got mine for £51 including p&p with a ti crown race and ti head cap bolt thing and a selection of carbon spacers.

Well I opted for a DH V1 headset purely because it'll be tough as hell, even though I'm fitting it to an XC HT. At £18 it's a bargain.

    The enduro ?

I've got their 'headset' the one after the enduro, its been on 3 bikes and is still spinning as smooth as they day it was fitted.

2nd hand chris king is much better then brand new anything else, as long as the guy who owned it first hasn't taken a hammer to it or something equally stupid.

i put a hope headset on a few weeks ago and was surprised how easy it was.
i didn't know it had a split crown race and made a drift at work to put it on.
i also hadn't realised that my reba forks had recesses on them to get at the old crown race.

  • Another vote for FSA Pig - I have a DH Pro on both my bikes and they work a treat - fit and forget on my Hardtail - been in place for 5+ years with a blob of grease twice in that time - running silky.
