Another "new" bike - Project Pig

Since I "converted" my commuter into a cross bike (it is faintly amusing how few components I actually carried over) I have become a ridiculous wreck. I'm nervous about where I leave it, how it might get damaged on the trains or left out on bike racks. Plus it now has no 'guards or rack so is much less useful.

Hence my new project - project hack bike. Something I won't really care too much about, so consequently won't behave like a twit every time I take it out. A utility that can get me to work, tow the trailer on the weekly shop, but still run smoothly enough to be a pleasure to ride. And, if the frame is good, possibly do tourer duty when called for.

My aim on this one (given that the cross project was well over budget) is to do it all for about 50 quid. Or at least to start with to get it on the road. So far 15 spent on the frame & forks, 12 on new gear cables. Might order the tyres now for another 20...

Wish me luck.

Trouble is, it's *your* bike. I thought I'd feel the same about my commuter. But she's worth going to war over. :)

Does the council tip on Armoury Way sell whole bikes or frames for £20 or so. I know the one near me does.

Also, there's a shop in Surbiton that sells second hand bikes, I think. Re-cycle or something.

You are so right. And it will be worse after a few months after I've had the frame stripped and powder coated (£70), ...

Thanks for the heads up on the tip, etc.

I've already managed to find a (hopefully suitable) frame and I believe I have all the bits lying around. Just spent £25 on tyres and tubes - so that puts me at £40 of my £50, leaving a tenner for new brake cables.

The problem is that I will want Eggbeaters - but first I'll see if I have some old ressurectable SPDs in my box of tricks.

No idea what cleats would fit them but they're yours for the postage if you want them

And you can have a spare BB and chainset if you're interested. Outer ring is worn, 39 is fine though. Obviously. :P BB is a bit cracked though.

I've two pairs of shoes that are Crank Bros cleated, so no major worry there ;). I did find the old SPDs. Might then put the SPD cleats onto my slow shoes...

@Wheezy: Thanks for the offer, but I have spare road pedals - don't think they have a place on a general use hack.

@CJ: I may take you up on that offer!

Finally treated myself to a replacement bottom bracket for the cross, went with the crank brothers cyan ISIS - what a work of art even the young lady in the shop commented over they're loveliness.
