Hi, i am looking round for a mountain bike for uynder £400. Had a quick look round and local dealers (Trek, Giant and spesh) but was asking for any advice from smaller brands. Also, whats important on a bike of this budget? I am riding on the road as well so would prefer lock out front forks but how much of a difference do mechanical disc brakes make? It will be used for some light trail rides. Thanks.

Much better stopping power with discs as opposed to v brakes, the pads last longer, and they work in the wet still.0

And you can upgrade to hydros later without needing for new wheels.
Don't know if your local dealers have this price but these bikes are worth a look:

The most important part is a good fork, with rebound damping.0
