Whilst I love the Rapha kit I own and there is more I would like to get, I simply cannot get my head around what the F*** this is all about!

I manufacture lots of my own 'bespoke perspiration solution’ but generally it comes-out in the washing machine.

agreed - I love the rapha bits I have and like you, i'd like some more - but some of the stuff is ridiculous - and sadly, I think it will keep getting worse as they seem to be ratcheting prices up again!

I reckon it's the latest version of the shaving kit/cycling journal/herringbone jacket...not designed to sell but to make us all discuss Rapha and to make the other stuff look reasonably priced.
  • £50 for that, ya want ya bumps feelin'.

Is it to go with their radical new style of cycling helmet? Cowboy_hat.jpg
  • Although the scarf is a bit gay - the actual print design is superb. A really good piece of graphic design.

I think its a bit dodgy, but if you wore it with panache, it would look fabulous, darlings.

I think rapha does touch on a seam of homo-erotica cycle based manliness.

Never thought I'd ever type that.

  • I think the Rapha brand comes as a consequence of the spread of wealth of the last decade. Their stuff is placed completely out of the market... of course they do offer a different product, but is it really necessary to ride with merino wool, silk and such noble fabrics?

    Personally I think not.

But then again, Assos charges similar prices for conventional acrylic fabrics

Are we all slaves of the brand? Yes we are, I'm afraid...

Well you might be - some of us manage fine with kit from less illustrious brands.

Having tried the merino base layer I would say yes.
It is much better than any other material I have used in the past, as in wicks exceedingly well and never smells.
£50 each may be over priced but if you can justify 3 (wear/wash/clean) then at £30 ish the price becomes competative with other merino manufacturers.

You will never catch me in a silk scarf though, especially at that price........
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

So you buy whatever the marketing teams decide to promote? That's a choice a lot of people make (including myself sometimes), but don't kid yourself you're a free thinker, you're still a consumer targeted by the marketeers. You just happen to be price lead rather than brand loyal.
  • But it has Ralpha on it so they know that we'll buy it.

Is it just me, or are wool and silk not some of the most conventional fabrics out there?

I am perfectly aware of that. I have my preferences, but price often decides for me.

Let's put it this way: don't give XXXX about gloves, anything which is cheap or on offer, same for jerseys, socks, overshoes, base layers, bits... I am a bit more selective when it comes to bibshorts... for the padding, I like Pearl Izumi and if it's on offer I go for that, but I have been tempted by other decent products on offer and found myself relatively content (DHB, Campagnolo and Castelli among them).
Don't even look at Assos as it's not for my pockets, but if it ever comes down to 50% discount, I'll grab a pair of bibs (it will never happen I know). Rapha is not something I aspire to... stuff that probably needs to be washed by hand, can't be bothered.

But yes, you are right, I buy what they impose on me

I know somewhere that does - every year at the end of the season, but you have to be quick!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

why not just use a hankerchief for the same amount of "neck insulation"? Ohhh... because it doesn't come with the prestige of the RAPHA name and $70 price tag.... right.
