Hi,

I am looking for a more upright riding position than the Scott Spark provides and am now considering the Scott Genius 30. Any opinions welcome on this bike.

I ride about 30-40 miles once a week then 10 miles 2-3 times a week through the South Downs. Most of the riding is single track or chalk and flint bridleways with some good climbs and fast downhills. I also do a longer ride 2-3 times a year - e.g. the coast to coast ride at 45 miles a day for 5 days. I want something fast and comfortable that can cope with the odd big hit.

Is the Genius a good bet? Thanks in advance for replies....

  • well you could always sell the shock on the 35 and get a better one if you don't like it....
FARKBOOK TWATTER Happiness is my fucking mood!
  • doesn't the 30 also get a carbon rear triangle, i'd go for the 30 purely because you don't have the buying power of scott, if you've got the extra money, or can save it relatively quickly then go for it!
  • At this level, a bike is a bit like a house. Buy the most expensive one you can afford, and you won't be disappointed! :D Would definitely go for the 30 if I had the option.

    Gary Fisher HKEK (for commuting)
  • just looked a bit closer, 30 has carbon rear triangle, and a much better spec, totally worth the extra money!

Thanks for this but my local bike shop has a pristine ex demo Spark 30 that I believe will be available at a good price. I am test riding it this weekend for a couple of days so I will see how things go. It's a medium size and I'm 6' so the fit will be the critical factor I guess. I had a good look at it today and it looked and felt superb. Unbeliveably light with the scope to lighten it further with a different front fork. I am marginally excited! :D

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated.

  • Medium will be too small.

The 30 is worth the extra money over the 35.

The ex-demo bike must be cheap if it is better than one of the Westbrook deals. Personally I would prefer a brand new bike over a used one, but it is your choice.

Don't be so sure, it's a long, stretched out race bike. Obviously try it out, it could well be fine ;)

I am 6'1 and ride a large with a long stem and the saddle set back as far as it will go. I was borderline at getting the XL. A medium will be too small for a 6 footer.

I'm 6'2 and I once had a go on a M Scale (which i would assume has very similar geo) and i could habe quite happily ridden it long term with some wide bars. Just goes to show that different people like different positions - it's what feels comfortable that matters,

Thanks for the replies. The demo bike was sold today! Consequently, I cannot try it out or buy it so it will be a Westbrook bike now but that is only if I can find a couple to try and work out the correct size. The medium felt okay when I tried it but I need them together so I can compare and choose the best.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I tried the Scott Spark today and it won't work for me. The riding position is too stretched out and the handlebars too far below the seat. Feels like I am on a racer.

Trying it was beneficial though as it made me realise that I want something with a more upright riding position. Whilst at the shop, I also had a ride on a Cannondale Rush Carbon which was better but not perfect either. I ran out of time before I could try a Gary Fisher Hi Fi Pro but this looked pretty good.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Cannodale or the GF bikes? Or alternative suggestions for something more upright that I can use for general riding on the South Downs. Sometimes 10 miles, sometimes 25.

Apologies but I am new to FS bikes and if spending £2K, want to make the right, comfortable choice.

    Thanks,

Just in case you didn't knew, the Gary Fisher Hi Fi Pro has 29" wheels.
But that shouldn't change anything if you like it.

About the sizes, what size Spark did you tried, L?
Because bigger size not always means just higher seat tube. It means longer top tube
and longer stem. So what it appears to be just 1" or 2" of seat tube higher, it actualy
means another 1" or 2" of streched position.

So just because you're 6ft, you don't need to buy 20" bike, just because the numbers
say that, I mean even with 17" with rised seatpost you might find it enough high.
Me for example I'm the same height like you and I ride 16" hardtail and with rised
seatopst at max I have no problems doing XC. Although I don't recomend 16" to
anyone who's mostly will be doing XC.

Why don't you try the Genius 50 or 40, it has more travel and it's a
bit heavier than the Spark but it should feel more comfortable.

Btw, what the shops around you stock, what brands?

I think the Genius 30 might fit the bill. I am going to take a ride on one tomorrow night.

  • was the genius 30 you wanted a demo bike at quest adventure
I assume this is French petrol - be careful in reverse - the car will retreat rapidly at the least provocation.

No probs. The Spark 30 they had was sold before I could test ride it.

  • I bought a genius 30 last month, its turning out to be a great bike, I've been doing 30 mile rides , did 50ish miles a couple ago weeks ago Petersfield to Brighton, I reckon it will fit the riding you describe. Some where on the post it mentions the rear triangle, its not carbon you get that on the 20 upwards. Definitely try a ride before you buy but if you can get it for £2300 its seem pretty good value.

Many thanks for the reply. In fact, I bought a Stumpjumper Elite instead at a fantastic price. I have ridden it properly for the first time tonight actually and I love it. Really pleased.
